Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Via Great Britain during the Commune de Paris, 1 January 1870 - 30 June 1871; 1871 (April 27): Underpaid Triple rate Envelope from Nice to Burlington, Vermont, bearing 1867/68 Napoléon lauré 20 c. blue & 40 c. orange in mixed franking with Bordeaux 80 c. rose (Yvert 29A+31+49), a fine and fresh three-colour franking tied by Gros Chiffres '2656' numeral with matching NICE despatch cds alongside, underpaid for the second weight rate and taken therefore as unpaid, framed "AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" alongside. The cover avoided Paris during the Commune de Paris and was sent to ST. NAZAIRE (April 30), "*FR* / 2F" oval accountacy handstamp, red LONDON transit backstamp (May 8), carried on 'Weser II' of the North German Lloyd, departing Southampton 9 May and arriving New York on 19 May, manuscript "38" cents GB debit to U.S. crossed out and manuscript "47" cents due in U.S. notes (42 c. in coin). A most attractive item full of postal history in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, in addition a very rare transatlantic cover showing the usage of an 1870 Bordeaux Issue adhesive.
