Sarah Childress Polk. Widow of James K. Polk, free frank "Free Mrs. J. K. Polk" on mourning cover to Mr. B. B. French in Washington D.C., with intact waffle wax seal on back, missing top flap where slightly reduced VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY DESIRABLE FREE FRANK OF THE WIDOW SARAH POLK. ONLY THREE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED, AND THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE ON A MOURNING COVER. Sarah Polk, a staunch admirer and supporter of Dolley Madison in her later years, has the distinction of being the first First Lady to be photographed on the White House grounds. Although Sarah lived more than 40 years following her husband's death in 1849, she lived somewhat reclusively in Nashville and evidently franked a relatively small amount of mail. Her free frank is exceedingly rare, with only three reported examples.

Mary Todd Lincoln. Widow of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, free frank "Mary Lincoln" on unsealed mourning cover addressed in her hand to Ellwood Johnson in Philadelphia, light strike of "Chicago Ill. Apr. 10" (ca. 1866) circular datestamp, some edgewear and toning VERY FINE. A RARE FREE FRANK OF MARY TODD LINCOLN, WIDOW OF SLAIN PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ON A BLACK-BORDERED MOURNING ENVELOPE. Mary Todd Lincoln was given free franking privileges starting Feb. 22, 1866. In May 1865, Mary Todd Lincoln and her sons, Robert and Tad, left Washington D.C. for Chicago, where they resided until leaving for Europe in 1868. Most mourning covers were sent at the prevailing first class rate, but if the enclosure was printed matter, it could be sent at the circular rate. There is no way to definitively state this held a printed enclosure, but the fact that it retains gum along the seal of the top flap speaks in its favor.
