50-CENTS PROVISIONAL WITH ULAN BATOR "POSTAG" OVERPRINT. THIS IS
ONE OF THE RAREST STAMPS OF MONGOLIA -- AND THAT OF ALL OF ASIA and
the world TO ACQUIRE. JUST THREE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED. This issue
came about just prior to the issuance of the 1932 Pictorial Issue.
Due to depleting supplies of stocks, revenue stamps were pressed
into use again with locally overprinted bilingual handstamps. In
May 1931, overprinted stamps were issued in Ulan Bator which read
in English "Postag" and Mongolian (translated) "Ulan Bator Shuudan"
(Post Office of Ulan Bator). While it is theorized that these were
only issued in Ulan Bator -- which very well may be the case -- few
examples of some denominations are known used elsewhere. The two
high values of the set -- the 50c (the example offered here) and
the $1.00 -- are major rarities in both unused and used condition.
As for the 50c, the Scott catalogue has a truly insignificant value
attached to this stamp at $275 for unused and $125 for used. This
could very well be that no genuine examples have reached the
market, and if they have, it went unnoticed by the editors of the
catalogue. Hellrigl covers both values in detail (p. 238-239). At
time of publishing, just three unused singles of the 50c were
known. He states "...illustrated by Beckeman, Mizuhara, and
Shimizu, have been recorded. Their overprints are very faint and
the last two are not beyond doubt." The last sentence casts great
doubt on the other two examples. Thereby, the example offered here,
according to Hellrigl, could possibly be the only recorded unused
example of the 50c known. Ex "Djingis Khan" (Beckeman, who acquired
it privately from Mikulski)

insignificant value attached to this stamp, similar to the 50c, at
$250 for unused and $175 for used. This could very well be that no
genuine examples have reached the market, and if they have, it went
unnoticed by the editors of the catalogue. Hellrigl covers both
values in detail (p. 238-239). At time of publishing, Hellrigl
recorded five examples though he casts serious doubts about two of
these examples. Two examples were in the Hellstrom collection
though one had rough perforations. Due to the rarity, it is
unlikely two sheets were overprinted. The clear cut perf example
later showed up in the Mizuhara collection. There is also another
doubtful example in the Shimizu collection (and was noted as
"forgery?" by him). The example offered here is the only example
with the selvage. It was last offered in a 2008 Viennafil auction
where after spirited bidding, it realized €21,000, plus buyer's
premium. Signed Dr. Orth. With 2007 Cronin certificate
