THE WARSAW Uprising of 1944 and its Scout Mail, the Gottfried
Steinmann Collection. A multi-award-winning exhibition collection
comprising more than 90 pages. Starting with the Hitler-Stalin
Pact, the collection traces Poland's path of suffering, then, via
the invasions by Hitler and Stalin, focuses on the "Scout Mail,"
which began as early as the second day of the uprising, August 2,
1944, with the first attempts at communication. An incredible
achievement by the mostly 13- to 15-year-old Scouts and Guides –
one must consider that an average of 3,000 to 6,000 letters were
delivered daily. The record day was August 13, 1944, with 10,000
pieces of mail. Eight times, the Vistula River was even crossed by
swimming, laden with mail. Only a few highlights of this
historically significant collection are mentioned here: internment
mail from an officer later murdered in Katyn, field post from the
SS Dirlewanger Brigade, a field post letter dated August 1, 1944
(the beginning of the Polish National Uprising), a daily report
from the Poludnie post office, and a letter with the so-called
"potato stamp" (fewer than half a dozen are known). The various
stamps used in Scout mail are described in detail. Certificates
from the experts Petriuk, Mikulski, and Jungjohann are available
for most items. Publications by the collector (a study published by
the ArGe Pfadfinder e.V. within the BDPh, a study with a
contribution by Janusz Kawalec, and the exhibition catalog
"Ausgetragen / Delivered" from the Pilecki Institute in Berlin)
accompany the collection. (A complete scan of the collection can be
found online.)
(Komplettscan
der Sammlung siehe im Internet.) (S)
