Note: Just 12 genuine covers are known bearing the Dardenne 1 d.,
five covers with multiple usages on 4 d. rate covers to France; 3
covers with Printed Matter rate usages, 1 Soldier's rate cover and
two local covers for the town rate of 1 d. It should be stated here
that the Kanai cover (lot 272) bearing the 1 d. and 2 d. values is

vertical pair. Cert. Behr (2005). Note: Rudge pair #123. The Behr
certificate states that it is impossible to certify whether the
stamps belong top the letter. However, whilst the Stanley Gibbons
catalogue lists the Dardenne issue as released on 12 December 1859,
this is one of five known stamped covers all with postal markings
consistent with the 9 December 1859 monthly P&O sailing. In
this describer's opinion the stamps were issued to coincide with
this sailing, as indeed were the De La Rue issue adhesives on 7
