Wellington, New Zealand, with a Plymouth 21 AP 00 cancellation. The
cover has been signed at the lower left by J.W.Wingfield. On the
back is a Wellington JUN 7 1900 arrival cancel. It would appear as
though this was posted on a troopship taking New Zealand soldiers
to South Africa

the Union depicting Eagle and Arms from St. Louis to Villersexel,
Dept. Haute-Saône, endorsed "Voie du Havre", struck by "ST. LOUIS
MO." despatch and "NEW YORK 9 / AUG 1" transit cds's in black as
well as CALAIS entry cds (Aug 14) cds in red, charged with '8'
décimes upon arrival. Reverse with PARIS transit and VILLERSEXEL
arrival (Aug 15) cds's. Sent with the 'City of London' of the Inman
line from New York to Liverpool (Aug 1-12, 1863), a very fine Civil
War cover to a rare destination.

Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The
American Civil War; 1863 (June 20): Double rate Entire letter from
New Orleans to Castillon, Dept. Gironde, endorsed "P. O. train 13",
struck by "NEW ORLEANS LA" despatch cds, another strike of 27 June
on reverse and "NEW YORK 27 AUG 15" debit datestamp of the exchange
office rectified to '30' cents, front with irregularly framed "HELD
FOR POSTAGE" handstamp in red, reverse with three indistinct
strikes of the Dead Letter Office in blue. The entire made its way
either with the 'City of Manchester' of the Inman line to
Liverpool, arriving there on 28 Aug or the 'America', an Allan line
charter, arriving in Southampton on 27 August 1863. Reverse with
PERIGIEUX transit and "CASTILLON-S-DORDOGNE" arrival (Aug 30)
cds's.

Envelope with full content from Beirut via Marseille to La Seyne
sur Mer, Var, internally dated "Vaisseau l'Imperial, rade de
Beyrouth 10 8bre 1861", bearing Napoléon imperforated 20 c. blue,
tied by Petits Chiffres '1896' numeral of Marseille, "ESCAD. DE LA
MÉDITée / Marseille" cds alongside, reverse with SEYNE-SUR-MER
arrival (Oct 22) cds in black. The vessel 'Imperial' was built in
1856 and equipped with 90 canons. Marine Fieldpost was directly
transfered to Marseille without passing a Fieldpost office. A fine
and fresh cover showing the military concession rate, a rare item,
signed Brun. Note: The 1860 civil conflict in Mount Lebanon and
Damascus, also known as the 1860 Syrian Civil War or the 1860
Christian–Druze war, was a civil conflict in Mount Lebanon during
Ottoman rule in 1860–1861 fought mainly between the local Druze and
Christians. Following decisive Druze victories and massacres
against the Christians, the conflict spilled over into other parts
of Ottoman Syria, particularly Damascus, where thousands of
Christian residents were killed by Muslim and Druze militiamen. The
fighting precipitated a French-led international military
intervention (ex Wikipedia).

in black, with British "1/-" charge marking in black and reverse
with Wells arrival cds (June 3?). Soiled as usual but a scarce and
early Transatlantic usage (the Civil War effectively started on
April 12 with the attack on Fort Sumter).

Angell in Vienna, Austria. Red "N. York Hamb. Pkt. PAID 2 Nov 10 (1861)" cds repeated twice at right, reflecting the fully prepaid 15¢ transatlantic rate via the Teutonia (Hamburg Line) for letters up to ½ oz. Hamburg transit and Vienna receiving backstamps, 12c stamp with small part of bottom left corner missing, likely a result from the original sheet separation and nick at top right, repaired backflap tear, though still extremely fine appearing overall.
This beautiful patriotic cover was mailed after the process of demonetization of the 1857-61 stamps had begun - but the New York post office clearly accepted the demonetized 12c stamp, making this a highly desirable franking with both Toppan, Carpenter and National Bank Note issues used together in November 1861. Of the nearly 100 known Angell Correspondence patriotic covers, approximately seven are mixed 1857-61 and 1861 Issue usages.
The addressee, Dr. Henry Clay Angell (1829-1911), was a distinguished Boston ophthalmologist whose early medical training and ambitions led him repeatedly to Europe for advanced study. A graduate of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1852, Angell initially practiced in Salem, Massachusetts, before traveling to Vienna for a year of postgraduate clinical work. He returned again in 1861 shortly before this cover was sent to pursue intensive specialization in ophthalmology under some of Europe’s most prominent eye surgeons. During his extended three-and-a-half-year stay abroad, he corresponded regularly with colleagues and family back in the United States, resulting in a now-famous group of patriotic transatlantic covers. After returning to Boston in 1864, Angell became a leading voice in American homeopathic medicine and ophthalmology, founding The New England Medical Gazette in 1866.
The famous Angell Correspondence is widely regarded as the most sensational group of American Civil War patriotic covers sent abroad with high-value frankings. Discovered in the 1920s and long preserved as a largely intact holding, the Angell correspondence passed through several important hands - first sold by a street seller to a collector named White, then acquired en bloc by Judge Emerson, and later by Miss Matthies from the Emerson estate. The dispersion of the Matthies collection in 1969 allowed these wonderful items to enter collections and exhibits around the world ever since.
