Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The
American Civil War & Blockade Runners; 1863 (May 22): Small cover
from the Burckmyer correspondence to Paris, enclosure datelined at
Charleston, carried from Wilmington by blockade runner Banshee (I)
on June 4, 1863, "NASSAU PAID JU 8 63" circular datestamp in red
and prepaid by forwarder 1 shilling 4p (1p in blue crayon retained
by Nassau post office), "Too Late" notation in same blue crayon

then on 'China' of the Cunard line on July 17, arriving in
Queenstown July 25, LONDON July 27 transit, and bold CALAIS entry
datestamp of July 27. Minor edge nicks, nevertheless a very fine
blockade-run cover. Note: The Banshee (I) made seven round trip
voyages between the Bahamas or Bermuda and Wilmington before she
was captured by the U.S.S. Grand Gulf on Nov. 21, 1863. Reference:

ITALY CAMPAIGN: 1859, folded lettersheet to Alexandria, Egypt,
written in Triest and transmitted via forwarding agent to France
(instead of the Austrian Lloyd, the eastern postal route being
severed due to the military operations), franked at the triple rate
with Napoleon 10 c., 20c. 40 c. and 80 c. (cut in) all tied with PC
“1896” (Marseilles) and handed over to the ship “Simois” from the
Messageries Impériales, reverse arrival cds. “ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE 22
MAI 59”. Interesting text in Italian “the departure of Austrian
steamships is prohibited … my correspondence, having to take
indirect routes, will arrive late and irregularly”; some minor
transportation traces and a vertical archival fold away from the
adhesives, fine and rare. A delightful item and poignant testimony
to the Risorgimento vicissitudes
