ART. 13." accountancy handstamp and French "ANGL. CALAIS" entry (Feb 25) cds, all in red. Reverse with London transit cds in red and AVIZE arrival (May 30) cds in black. 29): Printed matter letter from New Orleans to Vabre, Dept. Tarn,
sent with the 'Baltic' of the Collins line, endorsed "Printed
Reports Per Boston Steamer", bearing 1851/57 Franklin 1 c. blue
(Scott 9) in a horizontal pair, the multiple touched at top and
base, with huge margin at right including parts of the neighbouring
stamp, tied by "NEW ORLEANS LA" despatch cds, French "ÉTATS-UNIS
PAQ. AM / CALAIS" entry cds in red (Nov 29) alongside. Reverse with
VABRE arrival (Nov 30) cds in black. This 'Baltic' voyage lasted
from November 11-26, 1855 between New York and Liverpool.

Havre ...di più Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Havre line between 5 October 1850 - 30 June 1851; 1851 (June 3): Entire letter from Paris to Boston, sent with the maiden voyage of the 'Humboldt' of the Havre line, endorsed "via Havre", bearing 1850 Cérès 40 c. orange and pair 10 c. bistre (Yvert 5+1), overall fine and fresh example with vibrant colour and clear to huge margins, the leftmost adhesive with minor bends, cancelled by bold strikes of the grill obliterator, PARIS despatch cds and framed "P.P." in red as well as "NEW YORK SHIP JUN 18 / 29 cts" transit cds in black alongside. Reverse with "BUREAU MARITIME HAVRE" transit cds. This 'Humboldt' voyage lasted from June 4-17, 1851 between Le Havre and New York. Cover refolded and with horizontal fold, nevertheless a maiden return voyage from Le Havre and the only journey of the 'Humboldt with this rate. Provenance: Collection Steven C. PKt. APR 5" exchange office cds, French "OUTRE-MER LE HAVRE" entry cds (April 19), both in red alongside. Reverse with French ambulants and LIMOGES transit (April 21) cds in black. This 'Fulton' voyage lasted from April 5-19, 1856 between New York and Le Havre. An appealing and interesting franking, correctly paid for the British packet but underpaid by 15 cents for the 20 cents direct American packet rate and nevertheless accepted; plus 6 décimes due for French inland postage. Entire letter from New Orleans to Créon, Dépt. Gironde, sent with
the 'Silesia' of the HAPAG Line, endorsed "p. Steamer via England",
bearing two single examples each of 1870/71 2 c. brown and 3 c.
green (Scott 146+147), the 3 c. adhesives with sheet endings at
right, overall fresh examples, some perforation irregularities due
to the stamp's position at the edge of the entire, each cancelled
by segmented cork cancels, the 2 c. adhesives in addition by "NEW
ORLEANS LA." despatch cds in black. Oval PD in red, "NEW YORK PAID
JUN 27 / 6" credit cds in red, "LONDON PAID" transit (July 7) cds
in red, and CALAIS entry cds (July 9) in black alongside. Note:
When the 1857 France-USA postal convention expired at the end of
1869, an interim period without direct convention started which
lasted until the end of July 1874. During this period, rates were
again determined by a series of France-GB and USA-GB postal
treaties. This entire is a scarce use of 10 cents British Mail rate
to France prior to its October 1871 publication of this rate, a
"Phantom Rate" cover. Effective 1 July 1870 the new Anglo-French
postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France
to 3 d. per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from
12 c. to 10 c. (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from
8 c. to 6 c.).

imperf. 40 c. orange (Yvert 16) in a horizontal strip of ten
examples glued around the front and reverse of the cover like a
paper seal, two examples torn when the entire was opened, otherwise
the multiple with good to large margins, tied by Petits Chiffres
'1495' numeral, matching "LE HAVRE" despatch cds, framed PD, "NEW
YORK Am PACKET DEC 13" arrival cds as well as '84' alongside.
Reverse with French ambulants. This 'Baltic' voyage lasted from
November 30 - December 13, 1854 between Liverpool and New York.

Henderson City, sent with the 'Pacific' of the Collins line, no
endorsement, obverse struck by PARIS despatch cds and framed "P.P."
in red as well as "NEW YORK Am PACKET 21 OCT 3" transit cds. Upon
re-directing the envelope, an 1853/55 3 c. dull red adhesive (Scott
11A) was added to the top right corner with margins from good to
huge, part of the left neighbouring stamp, touched at right, tied
by by part strike of "CHARLESTON S.C. PAID OCT 6" cds in blue. This
'Pacific' voyage lasted from September 22 - October 2, 1855 between
Liverpool and New York.

and French '24' due for a cover paid correctly in the first weight

Bordeaux to New Orleans, sent first with the 'Africa' of the Cunard
line, after an accident replaced by the H.M.S. 'Vesuvius', endorsed
"par packet Anglais", bearing 1859 Napoléon imperf. 80 c. rose
(Yvert 17B), margins good to huge, tied by Gros Chiffres '532''
numeral, matching BORDEAUX despatch cds in the same black ink,
framed PD and "Br. Service" in red, and "BOSTON OCT 21 / PAID 15"
credit exchange cds in red (month slug inverted) alongside. Note:
On its westbound voyage 'Africa' was disabled off Cape Race and had
to go into St. John's, Newfoundland for repairs, arriving there on
13 October. H.M.S. Vesuvius came to her rescue and carried her
mails to Boston on 21 October. This is the only case where Cunard
mail was transported by a military vessel.

framed PD in red alongside, the adhesives tied in addition by "NEW

HAVRE entry datestamp (Nov 30) in blue. Reverse with PARIS arrival
cds (Dec 1). Sent with the only voyage of the 'Atlantic' of the
N.A.S.S.C. being in addition the last eastbound voyage of the
N.A.S.S.C. at all, leaving New York on 17 November, arriving in Le
Havre on 30 November 1860.

Chiffres '1769' numeral, matching "LE HAVRE" despatch cds in black
and framed "P.P." in red as well as "NEW YORK SHIP LETTER"
datestamp alongside. Note: The Jacob A. Stamler was a sailing ship
built by Thomas Stack at North Sixth Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
and launched 11 October 1856. Served as an immigrant transport and
general cargo ship until 1899.

Cunard ...di più Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Cunard line between 24 January - 9 February 1853, 2nd retaliatory rate; 1853 (Jan 13): Entire letter from Paris to New York, sent with the 'Africa' of the Cunard Line, endorsed "via Liverpool per Steamer of 15 January", bearing 1849/50 Cérès 15 c. green (2) and 1 f. carmine (Yvert 2+6), three overall fine and fresh examples with good margins, the 1 franc however touched at left, tied by 'Grille sans Fin' obliterator, PARIS despatch cds in black, framed PD in red and handstruck '21' cents due in black alongside. The first journey in the 1853 retaliatory rate, this 'Africa' journey lasted from January 15-30, 1853 between Liverpool and New York. An attractive entire, signed Calves; cert. Brun (1991). Note: The U.S. Post Office Department, unaware that the continued discriminatory rates charged on American Packet mail to France after the 1848 treaty were rescinded in Sep. 1851, briefly charged retaliatory packet postage of 16c (plus the normal 5c) on mail to France via British Packets, this lasted only from 24 January to 9 February, 1853.

Marne, located in the Côte des Blancs subregion of Champagne, sent with the 'Canada' of the Cunard Line, no endorsement, bearing 1847 5 c. red-brown (Scott 1), a fine and fresh example with margins from clear to large, tied by bold red grid cancel, the obverse struck by "SAVANNAH 5" despatch cds, framed British "COLONIES & c. ART. 13." accountancy handstamp and French "ANGL. CALAIS" entry (Feb 25) cds, all in red. Reverse with London transit cds in red and AVIZE arrival (May 30) cds in black. Reverse with "BUREAU MARITIME HAVRE" transit cds. This 'Humboldt' voyage lasted from June 4-17, 1851 between Le Havre and New York. Cover refolded and with horizontal fold, nevertheless a maiden return voyage from Le Havre and the only journey of the 'Humboldt with this rate. Provenance: Collection Steven C. PKt. APR 5" exchange office cds, French "OUTRE-MER LE HAVRE" entry cds (April 19), both in red alongside. Reverse with French ambulants and LIMOGES transit (April 21) cds in black. This 'Fulton' voyage lasted from April 5-19, 1856 between New York and Le Havre. An appealing and interesting franking, correctly paid for the British packet but underpaid by 15 cents for the 20 cents direct American packet rate and nevertheless accepted; plus 6 décimes due for French inland postage. Europe", bearing two single examples of 1872 Cérès 25 c. blue (Yvert 60), fresh and fine examples, the right adhesive lightly touched by filing fold, both tied by Gros Chiffres '6311' numeral, matching "LE HAVRE / LE PORT" despatch cds in black, framed "P.P." in red, and "NEW YORK / U.S. CURRENCY APR 14 / DUE 10" cds in black alongside. Note: On 3 April 1874, the steamer 'Europe' was abandoned when sinking in the Atlantic. Her passengers, crew, and mail bags were rescued by the National Line steamer 'Greece', arriving in New York on 14 April 1874.
