1872/1903: Cover selection (25) incl. two cover fronts, with rare
1872 cover bearing 2 d. yellow and 1 s. green mailed to USA with
ST. HELENA despatch cds in red (April 19), 1895 Soldiers 1 d.
Concessionary Rate cover sent by a serving Royal Engineer and
countersigned by Commanding officer (faults), also eight registered
examples most with the oval St Helena registered handstamp with
manuscript registration number including 1898 double rate cover to
USA franked 1890/97 2 d. and 2½ d. pair (ex collection Bob Deakin,
lot 114) and soiled but very rare 9½ d triple rate cover to Fiume,
Hungary (ex collection Bob Deakin, lot 127); very rare cover with
1868 5 s. orange single franking on OHMS cover to Paris; two
1884/94 covers with 3 d. deep mauve pair to London and another 1895
cover bearing a strip of four 3 d. with central stamps showing
plate scratch between positions 14 and 15, further fine range of
1890/97 Keyplate covers incl. 5 d. mauve pair on registered cover
to Leicester etc. Condition varies but many scarce and a mostly
attractive selection.

Arabi Rebellion 1882: Stampless OHMS cover to London endorsed
"Officer on Active Service in Egypt, No Stamps procurable", with
further manuscript below stating "Kassasine Lock"; struck with fine
"BRITISH ARMY POST OFFICE / EGYPT" circular datestamp code B (Sept
2) in black; "T" marking at left and large "2½" (pence) charge
marking in black. Reverse with Hampstead arrival cds (Sept 14).
Usual small wrinkles and flap fault but rare. Note: Hassasine
(Kassasine) Lock had been captured by British forces on August 26,
1882; following this the British defeated the Nationalists at Teh
el Kebir on September 13th and entered Cairo on the following day.
Arabi Pasha then surrendered himself and was exiled to Ceylon in
December of the same year. This cover was sent by Captain E.R.H.
Pollard to his mother.

Clarke" in manuscript to Taunton with Bishop Mark on reverse in black and rate deleted (Edward Clarke was a Commissioner for Excise from 1694-1700); 1764 entire letter from Portsmouth to care of the Postmaster in Buxton with fine circular "FREE" handstamp in red - the first year of use of any "Free" handstamp (Willcocks L765); 1793 entire from London to the Earl of Carnarvon in Newbury and readdressed to Portsmouth with two circular Free datestamps in red; 1802 entire with fine "♚/ FREE" datestamp; 1802 entire with framed "Above Privilege / Number" in red and "♚/ FREE" datestamp deleted*; 1814 entire from Stranorlar to London with "♚/ FREE" datestamp in red and Dublin mermaid transit in red; 1821 cover written on behalf of William Huskinsson (he was later the first person ever to be a Railway accident casualty), 1828 entire from East Grinstead endorsed "Colchester" but struck with rare "ABOVE / NUMBER" in black*; 1832 and 1836 entires to MP's, 1837 cover endorsed "W. Wilberforce" to Islington; 1839 entire to Minstead, Lyndhurst with content "I have been out with the Princess Victoria of Saxe Coburg and her sister, they neither of them speak any English"; and 1854 imprinted OHMS cover mailed to a Captain in Naples. A scarce and fine group. *Note: In the early days of the 19th Century the allowance for free mail for MP's, members of the House of Lords, Bishops etc. was as follows: To send up to 10 letters a day without charge; to receive up to 15 letters a day without charge. There were three Inspectors overseeing potential discrepancies.
