Shanghai and Hong Kong, on front franked with Hong Kong Queen
Victoria 2c and 5c, both tied by Shanghai B.P.O. cds (22 April
1892), beneath the Hong Kong 5c adhesive, a clear strike of CUSTOMS
ICHANG / AP 11 / 92 is discernible through the paper under strong
light, confirming the point of origin, on reverse franked with a
full set of Small Dragons (1c, 3c, 5c), each tied by large red
ICHANG Chinese Customs seals, further struck by CUSTOMS SHANGHAI
double-ring cds of 17 and 18 April, alongside a blue Shanghai Local
Post (17 April) marking, the cover finally shows a UK arrival cds
(31 May 1892), ex Steve Chazen.
An outstanding open-out cover dispatched from Ichang (宜昌) to England, bearing a remarkable combination of Chinese and foreign postal systems. A superb Small Dragons origin franking from Ichang, one of the scarcer Customs Houses. The combination of HK stamps through B.P.O. is the rarest amongst all Small Dragon’s foreign PO combination covers. (Estimate 50.000 HK$)

Scott 25, 31), horizontal and vertical pairs respectively, canceled
by “NINGPO” dollar dater on reverse of 1898 (9 Feb.) envelope to
Vitry, France (15.3), “Shanghai” transit dollar dater (10.2)
alongside, in combination with Hong Kong 10c applied on front and
canceled by “Shanghai/C” c.d.s. (14.2), showing “G.M.H.
PLAYFAIR/H.B.M. CONSULATE/NINGPO” cachet in violet adjacent, cover
opened out for display, one 4c on 4ca with defect at left and cover
has small portion of flap at back torn, a rare Small Dragon and

accountancy marking, a rate that was used for mail from places in
the Orient that were not British Possessions to France or vice
versa, the letter passed through Shanghai (8 December, Webb type Bi
cds in black on reverse) per PO CJ Oden, Hong Kong (12 December,
Webb type 13 cds i blue on reverse), aboard P&O steamer Orissa
to Galle, P&O Mooltan to Suez and finally, arriving in
Marseilles aboard P&O Vectis on the 25th of January 1864.
