Overland via Marseilles 1859 (Aug 15): Cover from Sydney, New South
Wales to Offenbach, Grand Duchy of Hesse endorsed “Via Overland and
Southampton for Frankfurt a/m in Germany”, bearing 1854 New South
Wales Diadem 6 d. olive-grey, four close to large margins, just
touched at top right, lightly cancelled by the Sydney duplex and
prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 11 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1
s. 5 d. to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Despite endorsement, the cover
was placed in the Marseilles mails for quicker delivery. “A.U.UEB
FRANKREICH” in black (not listed by Van Der Linden) applied by the
Thurn & Taxis Post in Frankfurt for transit through France. “16”
manuscript in blue scored through and re-rated “25” (kreuzer)
credit to France plus an additional “9” (kreuzer) for internal
German delivery totalling 34 kreuzer. “34” (kreuzer) manuscript in
blue plus an additional “1” (kreuzer) for local delivery to be paid
by the recipient. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse, a
small part of the lower backflap missing, otherwise very fine.
Illustrated in "Maritime Connections to and from New South Wales"
by Paul Wijnants on page 83. Highly colourful and a destination
rarity from the Australian Colonies, being the only recorded cover
from New South Wales to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Route - P&O
Line: Departed Sydney 15 Aug 1859 per “Salsette” via Port Louis (9
Sept) to Suez; overland to Alexandria; “Panther” (30 Sept) via
Malta (3 Oct) to Marseilles (6 Oct); by rail from Marseilles via
Paris and Frankfurt to Offenbach, arriving 8 Oct 1859 (55 days).
Note: The postal system of Hesse was privately operated by the

(but not taxed) for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 1 d. to France. Arrival datestamp of Isère (Sept 19) on the reverse and charged “10” (dècimes) manuscript in black for French internal postage to be paid upon receipt. A fine entire. Route - European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Sydney 18 July 1857 per “Columbian” via Galle (17 Aug) to Suez (7 Sept); overland to Alexandria. South ...di più Overland via Marseilles 1860 (April 22): Cover from Sydney, New South Wales to Nordenhamm, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg endorsed “per Emeu in closed mail to France”, bearing 1860 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. grey-brown, perf. 12, pair, neatly cancelled by Sydney duplex and prepaying 1 s. and underpaid 8 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 8 d. to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. “F. 59” Franco-German Convention handstamp (Van der Linden fig. 1199) in black (tying the lower stamp) and “17” (silbergroschen) manuscript in blue to be paid on receipt. Fine and rare: the only recorded cover from the Australian Colonies to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the only recorded example of the “F.59” Convention handstamp on mail from New South Wales. prepaid 6 d. and underpaid 7 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 1
d. to France. “5” (dècimes) handstamp in black for the French
internal postage to be paid upon receipt. “CURCIER, HAWKE & Co. /
ADELAIDE” merchants handstamp in blue at left and with multiple
French transit datestamps on the reverse. Very scarce - the
earliest stamped cover from South Australia to France via
Marseilles - an early usage and very fine. Route - Australasian
