Brindisi" route was utilised. The following 10 lots display the
only instance where all the examples of “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR
BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 3” framed handstamps applied
at the Foreign Office in London. always in black, for each the of
the Colonies (except Western Australia which has yet to be
recorded), plus their sub types, to have ever appeared in one
auction. It is the most extensive assembly of these scarce
handstamps used on Australian Colonial mail to ever come to
auction. Overland via Brindisi 1870 (Sept 9): Cover from Buckland,
Tasmania to Watford, England endorsed "via Marseilles", bearing
1868-79 Tasmania Chalon 4 d. blue and 6 d. slate-violet, cancelled
by barred numeral “73” of Buckland, with town manuscript at left
"Buckland 5.9.70". Prepaid 10 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter via
Marseilles and underpaid 3 d. for the redirected 1 s. 1 d. rate via
Brindisi. Framed “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE /

"S.S. ...di più 1888: Stampless cover to Manchester from an Officer serving on "S.S. Cameroon", struck on arrival in Liverpool with fine strike of large "6d." due marking in black (Officer's rate) with Manchester cds (March 24) alongside. Reverse with circular "LIVERPOOL / B.R. PACKET" in black (March 24). Scarce. Note: The S.S. Cameroon was delivered in June 1874 by John Elder and Company for the British and African Steam Navigation Company. The Cameroon beached and was lost after hitting a rock enroute from Monrovia, Liberia to Sinu Bay, Liberia in 1904.
