Liberia: 1897 incoming envelope from Verneuille sur Avre, France addressed to the French Consul in Monrovia, endorsed “United States of Liberia/ Via Liverpool”, franked 25c. tied cds, reverse with London cds (AU 23) and two segmented circular ‘L’ date stamps, Monrovia arrival cancel of 15 SE. It would appear that the Consul found that the letter had to be handled by the Foreign Ministry in Paris, and wrote this return address across the front of envelope in lilac. The cover was sent to Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast to catch the Loango to Marseille steamer with Paq R. No.5 cds of 5 Novon front top left. One small tone below stamp not unduly detracting, a journey of about 140,000 km ending up 100km from where originally posted. (E316)

French Consular Post Offices, Galatz; 1862 (June 14): Entire letter
to Marseille, bearing 1854 Napoleon imperforated 10 c. bistre and
40 c. orange, tied by central neat strike of Petits Chiffres '4008'
numeral in blue with type 22 cogwheel "GALATZ MOLDAVIE" cds
(Pothion = 26 points) and framed PD in the same ink as well as
framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANÉE" handstamp in red alongside,
reverse with "CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE" transit cds (June 17) and
MARSEILLE arrival cds (June 26). The 40 c. touched at lower left,
lightly oxidised, nevertheless a fine and fresh entire, rare mail
from the first years of the French Galatz office using the Petits
chiffres obliterator, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page
108. Reference: Displayed and discussed in Gmach IV on page 144.

Entire letter to Messina, bearing 1862 Napoleon perforated 40 c.
orange, tied by light Gros Chiffres '5085' numeral in blue with
type 22 cogwheel "GALATZ MOLDAVIE" cds (Pothion = 22 points) and
framed PD in the same ink alongside, the PD crossed out and framed
"AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" in red added, reverse with
"CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE" (April 16) transit cds and framed "MESSINA
ARRIVO" datestamp (April 21). Taxed with "5" décimes paying the the
difference of the 90 centimes rate for an unpaid letter minus the
40 centimes franking. Horizontal filing fold well away from the
franking, a fresh entire from this sought after office, illustrated
in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 111.

to ...di più French Consular Post Offices, Galatz; 1874 (Nov 14): Entire letter to Constantinople, bearing 1870 Siège 40 c. orange, a fine example tied by Gros Chiffres '5085' numeral in blue with type 22 cogwheel "GALATZ MOLDAVIE" cds (Pothion = 22 points) and framed PD in the same ink alongside, reverse with "CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE" (Nov 18) arrival cds. A fine and fresh late usage from this sought after office, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 116. Note: The French offices in Galatz and Ibraila were closed in January 1875, but due to the freezing of the Danube, mail from November 1874 was sent with one of the last vessels on the Ligne de Danube. written in Ibraila on 24 March 1863 and directed to Athens, posted
on board of a French steamer to Constantinople, bearing Napoleon
imperforated 10 c. bistre & 40 c. orange, each adhesive tied by
central Petits chiffre ‘3707’ numeral in black of Constantinople,
framed PD in red and framed "MER NOIRE in black alongside, reverse
with “CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE” and PIRAEUS transit cds's as well as
ATHENS (March 30, julian) cds. Entire on very thin paper with the
writing apparent, vertical file fold, nevertheless a very early
letter with the French Shipmail and originating from Romania.

horizontal strip of four, a fine and fresh multiple with good
perforation, tied by central Gros chiffre ‘5087’ numeral in blue of
Braila, cogwheel “IBRAILA VALACHIE” and framed PD in the same ink
(Pothion = 28 points) alongside, reverse with “CONSTANTINOPLE
TURQUIE” (Sept 10) cds. Minor toning and small part of backflap
missing, nevertheless an exceptional franking from the rarest
French office in Romania. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on
page 114, signed Roumet.

ATHENS arrival cds of the same day. Charged upon arrival with "45
LEP" handstruck due in black paid with Consecutive Athens Printing
5 l. green and 40 l. mauve (Hellas 17+20), tied by neat ATHENS cds.
The adhesive margins from shaved to large, nevertheless an
appealing cover in the 45 lepta rate following the French-Greek
convention. A most interesting cover from this rare office,
illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 115.

Navy ...di più 1889: French Zanzibar cover to the United States with 6-Page US Navy letter. Envelope franked by France Colonies 25 c. black on rose (crease), dated August 1889, tied by ZANZIBAR cds., addressed to Sharon, Massachusetts. Transit Paris Étranger and Boston markings on front and Sharon on reverse (SEP2). Enclosed a remarkable 6-page autograph letter on US Navy stationery, headed July 19th 1889, US Navy, signed by George H. Bray, U.S.S. Swatara, to a friend in Massachusetts. The letter recounts extraordinary events while cruising around Madagascar, including the dramatic pursuit of a fugitive who had murdered the American consul (Nov. 1888) and tales of armed resistance, dealings with natives, false promises of gold and diamonds, and eventual justice. An exceptional historical document linking French Zanzibar postal history with US naval operations off Madagascar and the consular murder affair of 1888. Both cover and letter are complete, some imperfection to envelope.
