1884 (Feb 21): Official envelope from the Royal Italian Civilian
Commissioner in Assab, Eritrea, addressed to the Minister of
Foreign Affairs in Rome franked India 42 a., seven times the
standard rate via Brindisi bearing 4 a. in a block of eight and
pair plus pair 1 a., tied by 'B' in squared grid with "ADEN CANT"
cds alongside. Two 4 a. at right creased, "SEA POST OFFICE D." and
"ROMA" arrival backstamps. Envelope disinfected by slitting
affecting two 4 a. adhesives. Rare origin, cert. Sorani (1998)

Inclinados 1844/46: 30 r. black on greyish thin paper, Type II, a
block of six (2 x 3), used on reverse of 21 March 1846 entire
letter from Caxias to Lisbon, Portugal tied by three strikes of
circular "CORREIO DE CAXIAS" circular handstamps in red with
manuscript date in red ink; prepaying the internal rate of 60 reis
and the maritime rate of 120 reis due from the Brazilian post for
the journey by ship on the River Itapecuru to Sao Luis and thence
to Pernambuco. Unusually probably carried by hand to Lisbon to
Portugal as no charge marks present on obverse. Illustrated in
"Inclinados" by Bernd Juchert on page 61 and in Walter Taveira's
handbook on page 340. A block of six is the second largest multiple
known on cover. A most unusual and rare franking. Cert. E. Santos

Coloridos 1854: 10 r. blue on yellowish thin paper, a used block of
six (3 x 2) used on reverse of 1866 entire letter from Pará to
Figueira, Portugal endorsed "via Pernambuco", paying the internal
60 reis single rate, tied by dotted lozenge in black. Charged at
double rate on arrival with "300" reis handstamp in black, with
"Transatlantico" violet cds of entry (15 Jan 1867). Small opening
tear just touches lower left of the multiple but a rare usage.

An outstanding lot (47 items).

(May 29, 1854), part of the multiple seemingly removed when the
cover was readdressed upon arrival; 1855 Mourning envelope (March
3, 1855) mailed with 1854 1 s. blue to Dawlish per "Shalimar", 1855
mourning envelope to Launceston with Woodblock 6 d. orange per
"Mermaid", 1855 mourning envelope to Launceston with Woodblock 6 d.
orange per "Lightning", 1856 mourning envelope to Launceston with
Woodblock 6 d. orange per "Birmah", and 1857 cover to Launceston
with Woodblock 6 d. orange per "Oneida". Generally fair to very
fine; a charming group (6 items)
