printing ...di più English Mails Monthly Packet Service 1857 (Sept): Richardson printing 1 s. green on blued paper, no wmk., imperforate, a superb vertically bisected example with large margins on the remaining sides, tied to 1858 cover from Miss King to Cruden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland by barred "18" numeral obliterator of Port Chalmers in black. Carried on European & Australian Line ship "S.S. Victoria" from Sydney (Oct 11) arriving Southampton (Dec 18). Reverse with OTAGO cds (Aug 23) and arrival cds of Aberdeen (Dec 20). Slight horizontal file fold crosses the adhesive but a magnificent and attractive cover (see Bob Odenweller "The Postage Stamps of New Zealand" for illustrations of comparisons, nearly all) and one of the finest of the few bisect covers recorded. Reverse with "AHUHIRI" despatch cds (June 6). A fine and most attractive three colour franking paying the extra 3 d. per ¼ ounce for Premium Express mail via Marseilles and thence by rail to Great Britain. A very rare and most attractive cover. both ...di più English Mails via P&O 1860: Covers (2) to London or Birmingham, both carried on the P&O "Emeu" from Sydney via Galle, with prepaid stampless envelope rated "6 d." in manuscript showing "PORT VICTORIA / NEW ZEALAND" despatch cds (March 30) and mourning envelope franked by 1857/63 6 d. brown, margins all round, tied by "18" obliterator of Port Chalmers backstamped "OTAGO" (March 30) to Birmingham; each with arrival cds's of June 17, 1860. Note 1: Journey time 79 days. The "Emeu" was accidentally rammed by the S.S. "Williams" in Sydney Harbour, causing considerable damage and delaying the ship by 8 days. The "Emeu" carried the mails to Suez, the covers being carried from Alexandria on the "Pera".

Reverse with Auckland (Feb 8) cds with Kirkaldy arrival (April 13). A few minor imperfections with vertical creases away from the adhesives but a very scarce franking; also a single imperf. 6 d. used to London on 1865 cover, the adhesive being cancelled "Hawick / 7 Aug 1865" in manuscript. Note 1: Journey time 63 days. Carried on the P&O "Madras" from Sydney, the "Candia" from Galle, and the "Ceylon" from Alexandria to Marseilles. Note 2: The premium Express rate via Marseilles rate was raised on Sept 12, 1863 to 10 d. per ½ ounce. This rate was valid until Dec 22, 1870.

octagonal "TOO LATE / DUNEDIN" in red and struck with red "P.D."
and Marseilles entry marking (May 11) in red. Reverse with Cognac
cds (May 13) and Jarnac arrival (May 13). An unusual cover -
overpaid 2 d. for the 8 d. rate for the first ¼ ounce. Note:
Carried from Sydney on P&O "Northam", the "Carnatic" from
Galle, the "Massilia" from Alexandria to Marseilles. Provenance:

Reverse with "WANGANUI" despatch cds (Nov 8). Part back flap missing and overall soiling as to be expected, but a rare usage during the 1864-1866 Third Period of the 'Maori Wars': this cover being mailed during the Hau Hau conflict in the Taranaki province.

the "Lyttelton Times", issue of August 17, 1868, used to King's
Lynn, Norfolk and endorsed "via Panama", tied by bold Christchurch
"C" obliterator in black. The Newspaper travelled via Panama on the
New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail steamer "Mataura" leaving
Wellington on Sept 10, 1868 and arriving in Plymouth on October 27,
1868. Rare - just four Newspaper frankings are recorded prior to
1874.

on obverse. Reverse with Wellington cds (March 9), Dunedin cds
(March 21) and Avignon cds (May 14). Some ageing but an impressive

1870 cover from Auckland to London tied by "Auckland 1"
obliterators in black; backstamped in Auckland (Dec 10) and in
Coventry (Feb 27, 1871), charged a further "1" (penny) for local
readdressing. Slight flap fault but a fine cover. Note: Suez was
the Secondary Packet at this date - from April 1870 the via San
Francisco route was both quicker and thus more popular.

1866 cover from Christchurch to Hull endorsed "via Marseilles" and
rated 10 d. for this purpose; all tied by "C" obliterators of
Christchurch in black. Despite the routing endorsement, the cover
was instead mailed from Christchurch (Oct 5), via Lyttleton (Oct
7), Panama and St. Thomas to Southampton (Dec 1) and Hull (Dec 2).
A scarce and most attractive cover - the "S.S. Seine" was
quarantined on arrival due to a Yellow Fever outbreak on board.
Note: Journey time 59 days.

(Aug 27) cds, Christchurch cds (Aug 31), Milan cds (Nov 1) and
Verona cds (Nov 1). Minor imperfections but a very rare destination
- just two Chalon head covers are recorded to Italy. Cert. RPSL

Due to the Franco-Prussian War the cover sent via Brindisi instead and struck with superb framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 3d." handstamp in black. The Brindisi route was 3 d. more expensive than the closed via Marseilles route. Reverse with Bolton arrival cds (Dec 26). Staining to envelope but a magnificent and most attractive cover of great rarity - just two examples of this handstamp are known on New Zealand Mail. Cert. RPSL (2006). Note 1: Journey time 81 days. Carried on P&O "Geelong" from Sydney, the "Mooltan" from Galle and the A & O Line "P. Tomaso" from Alexandria to Brindisi (Nov 23). yellow and 6 d. blue, both perf. 12½, used on 1872 cover from
Thames to Aalesund, Norway all tied by "Thames / A3" in black.
Carried via San Francisco on the Pacific route and correctly rated
at 11 d. for a ½ ounce letter, with British "3d." credit handstamp
in red and "5" skilling charge on arrival in red. Reverse with
Auckland cds (June 11) and Christiania transit cds (Aug 10). The 4
d. yellow with defects where applied off the edge of the cover,
minor creasing however this attractive cover is believed to be the
sole known Chalon head cover to Norway. Cert. RPSL (2010). Note:
November 22, 1871 - Schedule D proclamation at Wellington P.O.
which reduced the rate from the Colony to Norway from 1/2 d. to 11
d. per ½ ounce.

Carried on European & Australian Line ship "S.S. Victoria" from Sydney (Oct 11) arriving Southampton (Dec 18). Reverse with OTAGO cds (Aug 23) and arrival cds of Aberdeen (Dec 20). Slight horizontal file fold crosses the adhesive but a magnificent and attractive cover (see Bob Odenweller "The Postage Stamps of New Zealand" for illustrations of comparisons, nearly all) and one of the finest of the few bisect covers recorded. The Brindisi route was 3 d. more expensive than the closed via Marseilles route. Reverse with Bolton arrival cds (Dec 26). Staining to envelope but a magnificent and most attractive cover of great rarity - just two examples of this handstamp are known on New Zealand Mail. Cert. RPSL (2006). Note 1: Journey time 81 days. Carried on P&O "Geelong" from Sydney, the "Mooltan" from Galle and the A & O Line "P. Tomaso" from Alexandria to Brindisi (Nov 23).
