Incoming Mail: 1842/43 Two covers sent from London to Gambia, one a
large format envelope endorsed "on H.M. Service" from the Treasury
to Major Maclean, with London crowned paid cds and oval 'Paid Ship
Letter / London' in red (30/6/42). The other, a commercial entire
addressed to Lieut. Glen of the 3rd West India Regiment on McCarthy
Island, River Gambia, marked 'Pd' with Charing Cross despatch
datestamp (3/7/43), rate '8' and with a 'Paid Ship Letter / London'
dated oval also in red. Both have imperfections, although very
presentable and scarce (2). Provenance: Collection John Sacher,

To the reverse, a despatch datestamp (29/8) in black and circular segmented quadrant cancel with 'L' in the center. Heavy creasing, stained and some faults. A note on the inside gives details of an arms shipment, "Forty Five Chests Guns, Two Kegs Flints, Eighty Cases Shot and Ball, Eight Hundred and Forty Kegs Gunpowder, Six Hundred and Twenty Bars Iron." Most interesting item. Provenance: Collection John Rose, May 2011
