SG 13; As a Result of the Mahdi Revolt Against the Egyptian
Government, Kassala in Southeastern Sudan Was Occupied by Dervishes
in 1885, & Was Subsequently Followed by Dervish Incursions into the
Adjacent Italian of Eritrea; In 1893 The Sudanese Were Repulsed by
the Italian Forces wherein Italian Soldiers Occupied Kassala. Some
of These Forces Remained in the Area until the Dervishes Were
Defeated the British at Omdurman in 1898. As Can Be Seen by This

large-part strikes on East Africa & Uganda 4a, 3c and 6c x2 (one on
small piece). Uganda PO -.8.1901; transferred to Sudan -.5.1914.
Egyptian presence was established by General Charles Gordon in 1874
but all of Sudan was evacuated in 1885. The Ugandan goverment had
been allowed to administer the area from the late-1890s until
control was resumed by Sudan in 1914.
