Captain William Henry Tabb, 14th Mississippi ...di più
Captain William Henry Tabb, 14th Mississippi Infantry,
Prisoner-of-War Correspondence. Fascinating group of covers and
letters, most items are from the period of 1862 when Tabb was a
prisoner-of-war at Union prisons Camp Chase and Johnson's Island,
after being captured at Fort Donelson in February 1862, one letter
dates from 1861 before capture and one cover and letter date from
1863 after he was exchanged, letters are between Tabb and members
of his family, several flag-of-truce covers show examiner markings,
condition is a bit rough on some of the covers but the letters are
intact and readable A FASCINATING CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN A
MISSISSIPPI CONFEDERATE OFFICER, IN UNION PRISON CAMPS IN OHIO, AND
HIS FAMILY IN THE SOUTH. We recommend viewing our website PDF for
the complete group and a reading of the letters, but a summary in
date order follows: — June 21, 1861 letter from Tabb to his sister,
datelined at Bowling Green Ky. to Choctaw Agency Miss., cover
postmarked Clarksville Tenn. (edge faults) — March 10, 1862 letter
from Tabb at Camp Chase to his father, inner flag-of-truce cover
signed by Tabb with "Rebel Prisoner" notation and censored at Camp
Chase, entered mails with Huntsville Ala. double-circle datestamp,
soling but good condition — April 11, 1862 incoming letter to Tabb
at Camp Chase from his sister, inner flag-of-truce cover addressed
to him without postmarks — April 18, 1862 letter from Headquarters
Army of the Mississippi to Mary Tabb expressing hope that an
exchange may soon be accomplished and allow Tabb to return home —
April 28, 1862 flag-of-truce cover from Sandusky O. franked with 3c
1861, examiner's marking, C.S.A. 10c due and blue Petersburg Va.
backstamp, cover and stamp with faults — May 6, 1862 incoming
letter to Camp Chase datelined at Columbus Miss. from Tabb's
sister, flag-of-truce cover with 3c 1861 and examined markings,
stamp small flaw and overall soiling — June 22, 1862 letter from
Tabb at Johnson's Island to his mother, inner flag-of-truce cover
to Choctaw Agency postmarked at Richmond Va. and Due 10, opening
faults at right — Jan. 30, 1863 letter from Tabb after release and
rejoining his unit, cover with 10c Light Milky Blue, Stone Y (2e)
from Columbus Miss., stamp and cover faults After being exchanged
in September 1862, Tabb continued fighting in the war until late
1864. He suffered a fatal wound in the defense of Atlanta and died
on Aug. 5, 1864. This part of the Tabb correspondence focuses on
his time as a prisoner-of-war. An additional and more lengthy part
of the Tabb correspondence, covering the rest of the war, can be
found at Swann Galleries
