20c Green, Diagonal Half Used as 10c (13d). Two covers bearing
diagonal halves from the same stamp, one is top right half tied by
"Charleston S.C. Jul. ?" double-circle datestamp on oatmeal cover
to Manchester S.C., second is bottom left half tied by "Charleston
S.C. Aug. 22" circular datestamp on cover with same handwriting to
same recipient in Manchester S.C., both stamps with large margins
on the other sides EXTREMELY FINE. AN INCREDIBLE PAIR OF COVERS
BEARING DIAGONAL BISECTS FROM THE SAME STAMP, USED FROM CHARLESTON,
SOUTH CAROLINA. We offered another cover from the McCrady
correspondence, with the same handwriting and a 20c bisect, an 1864
use from the Wishnietsky collection (Sale 1064, lot 350). We have
also offered wallpaper covers from this correspondence. Apparently,
the correct denomination stamps as well as paper were scarce for
this family, as they were for many Southern families during the
Civil War. With 2017 P.F. certificates specifically referencing the
certificate number from the other cover and stating the bisects
come from the same stamp.

Oct. 25" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Adams Run S.C., bright and fresh in every respect EXTREMELY FINE GEM. POSSIBLY THE FINEST 20-CENT BISECT KNOWN IN TERMS OF MARGIN SIZE AND CONDITION. A SPECTACULAR COVER. While there are scarcer uses of the 20c bisect—wallpaper and other adversity covers, used on a postmaster’s provisional entire, and covers from Texas—one would be hard pressed to improve on the stamp and condition of this cover. Ex Ferrary, Lehman and Haas. With 1999 P.F. certificate as the old No. 13c.

Hildsheim, Germany, on April 20, 1814, and studied pharmacy in
Jena, Germany, before immigrating to Texas in 1845. He landed at
Indianola and arrived in New Braunfels in 1846. An early settler of
the city, Forcke served as one of the first city aldermen from June
7, 1847 to March 3, 1849. Forcke bought property in 1851 on South
Seguin Street where he located his drug store. His business closed
in 1898. August Forke married Johanne Sophia Fricke (1816-1898) in
1847. The couple had five children. He died January 2, 1903, and is
buried in the Comal Cemetery in New Braunfels, Texas. Among the
Forcke papers at San Jacinto Museum is an invoice from S. Ramos y
Hermano of Monterrey, Mexico, dated August 19, 1863, that documents
the necessity for Texans to turn to Mexico to import drugs during
the Civil War. (Source:
