1900, April 7, Goodyear 1 d. pale blue on blued horizontally laid
paper, a fine used example from base of the sheet of twelve
subjects, Plate III, position 34, showing the BROKEN VALUE TABLET
with nine vertical white lines running to the margin, the present
adhesive is further distinguished by the classic Plate III constant
variety caused by build-up of emulsion on the lower edge of the
third glass plate, 1d Goodyear was one of the locally produced
Mafeking emergency issues, created after earlier siege stocks had
been exhausted and produced by photographic ferroprussiate process;
it depicts Cadet Sergeant-Major Warner Goodyear, leader of the
bicycle-riding Mafeking Cadet Corps, whose service became part of
the historical inspiration behind Baden-Powell’s later Scout
movement, tied to O.H.M.S. envelope used by the Military
occupational forces after the Siege had been lifted, tied by oval
framed '87TH BATTERY / ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY' datestamp (July 6) in
violet, the cover is addressed to the OFFICER COMMANDING/87th FIELD
(HOWITZER) BATTERY/R.F.A., the adhesive with a tiny surface rubbing
is mentioned for full accuracy and is of not relevance, a
magnificent and extremely attractive combination of a military
administration cover combined with a siege stamp, provenance Robson
Lowe, London, 8 June 1993/lot 134 and collection Besancon,
Corinphila sale 238/lot 4259, sold for a price around 8,500 Euro,
