1830s thru 1870s, all but two stampless, including 1832 fumuigated,
also including drop letters, circulars, some inbound including from
foreign destinations, also some sent to foreign destinations
including Cuba, Scotland, England, Ireland, France, range of
markings, few faults to be expected but selected by the owner for
overall eye appeal or for something unusual, Very Fine group

"New Orleans, La. Oct 6" cds with matching red "SHIP" and large red
"12" (10¢ postage and 2¢ ship fee) to Boston with endorsement "Via
New Orleans paid", with transcription of lengthy contents that
reads, in part, "...We left Rio April 20...on the 22 of May 23
entered the Straits of Magellan...in company with the schooner
'S.A. Sutter' of Warren R.I....owned by a company of gold
seekers...left the straits July 30...Callao Aug 19th...we find that
letters can be sent via Panama from this port by prepaying the
postage (62½ cts per half oz). On finding the rate of postage I had
half-a-mind to destroy my letter but supposing that this long lapse
of time if you did how hear from us, would cause you anxiety, I
conclude to send this and having one written to Mother I enclose
it, as its weight will not double the expense in this
manner...Henry R. Taylor"; letter describes in wonderful detail all
the trials and tribulations of the trip via the "straits", Very

upper left corner, 10c Rose (5) shows the burden of wartime
conditions and age, neat manuscript cancel and tied by red
"Alexandria La. Aug. 12" (1862) circular datestamp on buff cover to
Columbus Tex., from the Bostick correspondence, carried west and
entered the mails at Alexandria La., diagonal slit in cover,
scattered soiling specks and other effects of ageONE OF EIGHT
RECORDED COVERS WITH THE EDEY LABEL, OF WHICH HALF ARE AFFIXED TO
THE BACKS. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EDEY EXPRESS COVER WITH THE
10-CENT ROSE. IT IS ALSO THE ONLY EDEY COVER POSTED OUTSIDE OF
TEXAS.Arthur H. Edey enlisted as a Private in Co. A, 5th Regiment,
Texas Infantry, on July 19, 1861, at Houston. He was detailed as
agent for the regiment at the Texas Depot in Richmond on Feb. 7,
1862. In this capacity, Edey facilitated mail service between
members of the regiment serving east of the Mississippi and their
correspondents back home. Edey affixed his label to envelopes that
were carried by civilians or soldiers who were willing to take them
and mail them when they arrived in Texas. In October 1862 Edey was
transferred back to the 5th Texas Regiment and was replaced by
Sergeant Jefferson Wright, who left his position after a month.
Edey was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, and
sent to Fort Wood, New York Harbor. He was paroled on April 15,
1865. (Updated info from Crown, CWPS website).The CWPS census
records eight examples of Edey's label, including a few heavily
stained or defective covers. Only four have the label on the front
of the cover. This is the only cover with the 10c Rose and the only
one postmarked outside of Texas.Ex Parks, Lemley, Everett and

Each of them carrying a heavy trunk weighing a hundred pounds or more except one, which weighed 64 and carried by a boy, only 16 years of age...The constructing of a railroad across would not be half so stupendous an affair as the Baltimore & Ohio R...Some persons had been waiting 6 weeks, the steamer tickets were all sold up to Sept. and passengers still crowding in from the states, when we landed it was supposed there were 2,000...It appears a written notice was posted at the door of the consul one day that Cala. Mail would be opened next at 12 O'clock and we knew nothing of it till too late...Joseph Parker" some small cover flaws, Fine. Estimate; $150 - 200

The issue also included information on Battle of Milliken's Bend — the first major battle involving black troops (Harper's article is not included but can be seen in Sale 1037, lot 2869).
