ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED COMPLETE COVERS BEARING THE AUTAUGAVILLE POSTMASTER'S DISTINCTIVE BRASS-DIE PROVISIONAL. Autaugaville, situated on the Alabama River about 25 miles west of Montgomery, had a Civil War population of less than 1,500. Its postmaster, Albert William McNeel, seized all U.S. Post Office Dept. property and turned it over to the Confederacy. Postmaster McNeel used two different handstamped markings to make provisional envelopes. The earlier type is Scott 10XU2, of which one example is recorded, dated Oct. 8, 1861 (ex Walcott, Caspary, Lilly, Dr. Agre, and most recently Sale 1289, lot 745). The brass handstamp seems to have followed. The brass engraving is similar in design to the Athens adhesive provisional. The postmaster's son is on record saying that his father used printer's ink on the hand-held die and gently tapped the device onto each envelope. It is noteworthy that the Kilbourne, Hill and Haas Confederate postmasters' provisionals collections were missing the Autaugaville. Angell in Vienna, Austria. Red "N. York Hamb. Pkt. PAID 2 Nov 10 (1861)" cds repeated twice at right, reflecting the fully prepaid 15¢ transatlantic rate via the Teutonia (Hamburg Line) for letters up to ½ oz. Hamburg transit and Vienna receiving backstamps, 12c stamp with small part of bottom left corner missing, likely a result from the original sheet separation and nick at top right, repaired backflap tear, though still extremely fine appearing overall.
This beautiful patriotic cover was mailed after the process of demonetization of the 1857-61 stamps had begun - but the New York post office clearly accepted the demonetized 12c stamp, making this a highly desirable franking with both Toppan, Carpenter and National Bank Note issues used together in November 1861. Of the nearly 100 known Angell Correspondence patriotic covers, approximately seven are mixed 1857-61 and 1861 Issue usages.
The addressee, Dr. Henry Clay Angell (1829-1911), was a distinguished Boston ophthalmologist whose early medical training and ambitions led him repeatedly to Europe for advanced study. A graduate of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1852, Angell initially practiced in Salem, Massachusetts, before traveling to Vienna for a year of postgraduate clinical work. He returned again in 1861 shortly before this cover was sent to pursue intensive specialization in ophthalmology under some of Europe’s most prominent eye surgeons. During his extended three-and-a-half-year stay abroad, he corresponded regularly with colleagues and family back in the United States, resulting in a now-famous group of patriotic transatlantic covers. After returning to Boston in 1864, Angell became a leading voice in American homeopathic medicine and ophthalmology, founding The New England Medical Gazette in 1866.
The famous Angell Correspondence is widely regarded as the most sensational group of American Civil War patriotic covers sent abroad with high-value frankings. Discovered in the 1920s and long preserved as a largely intact holding, the Angell correspondence passed through several important hands - first sold by a street seller to a collector named White, then acquired en bloc by Judge Emerson, and later by Miss Matthies from the Emerson estate. The dispersion of the Matthies collection in 1969 allowed these wonderful items to enter collections and exhibits around the world ever since.

(WV11-WV13). Complete set, tied by clearly struck "Great Central
Fair June 25, 1864" circular datestamps on purple cover addressed
to Leamington, England, carried outside of the mails VERY FINE. ONE
OF TWO COMPLETE COVERS BEARING A COMPLETE SET OF THE PHILADELPHIA
GREAT CENTRAL FAIR STAMPS AND THE ONLY ONE ADDRESSED OUTSIDE THE
UNITED STATES. This outstanding rarity of Civil War postal history
is one of only two recorded complete covers bearing the full set of
three Great Central Fair stamps. A third set is known on backflaps
trimmed from an envelope. On June 13, 1861, President Lincoln
signed a document giving the Sanitary Commission semi-official
status. Its purpose was to support sick and wounded soldiers.
However, funds were not provided to carry on the work, so Sanitary
Commission fairs were organized as fundraisers and to enlist
volunteers. The Great Central Fair, held in Philadelphia from June
7 to 28, 1864, was the largest and best-organized of all the fairs.
To raise funds, President Lincoln signed 48 copies of a special
authorized edition of the Emancipation Proclamation; 26 are known
to survive—Siegel sold one of the last in private hands in 2012 for
$2,127,500 (Sale 1025, lot 108A). The Philadelphia fair was the
only one attended by Lincoln, whose passionate speech caused such
an outpouring of emotions among spectators that officials decided
it would be dangerous for him to attend another. Eight Sanitary
Fairs issued stamps, but the Philadelphia fair produced stamps that
exceed all others in their complexity and beauty. They were printed
by Butler and Carpenter of Philadelphia (Carpenter was a member of
the Post Office Committee of the fair). It depicts an eagle at
center, similar to the James A. Clark Match stamp (Scott RO62). 34
stars were added to the background, for each of the states in the
Union prior to the onset of the Civil War. These are also the only
perforated Sanitary Fair stamps. Three denominations were
printed—10c, 20c and 30c—and the stamps were valid for use within
the fair. Additional postage stamps were required for delivery
within or beyond Philadelphia. The stamps were sold by young ladies
at the fair's post office booth, who would write a poem or note to
the addressee—the length depended on the denomination purchased.
Four thousand such enclosures were prepared in advance. We record
only two covers bearing a complete set of the Great Central Fair
stamps, plus a back panel of a cover bearing a set. The other
complete cover was offered in our 2019 sale of the William H. Gross
collection (Sale 1211, lot 391) and is addressed within the fair.
With 1993 P.F. certificate. SCV $10,000.

bold ...di più (36b,64) 1857-61 12c black and 1861 3c pink Washington, tied by bold strike of large black "Paid" in grid cancel on elaborate full-color "Illustrated History of the Stars and Stripes" patriotic cover to Dr. Henry C.
