1759 (October 1.): Entire Merchant letter from Smyrna addressed to
Pièrre G. Roux & Fils Negociant in Marseille, formerly routed via a
forwarding agent Jean Henry Stametz in Vienna 'Voie de Vienne', but
crossed out and routed via Geneva, Switzerland and taxed on
arrival, as the notes on the lettersheet show. Because of the Seven
Years' War (1756-1763), merchants avoided travelling overland via
Austria. A rare item

struck on despatch with oval "P.P. / AGENCE DE SMYRNE" handstamp in
blue, slit for disinfection and rated "25" lepta due in red
(postage 20 lepta + 5 lepta disinfection), with Syra arrival cds in
black on reverse. Restorable cover closed tear at base but rare;
and Austrian Levant 1867 10 s. blue (Mi. 4) on cover to Gallipoli,
struck with oval "JOLY & Co. / SHIPPING AGENTS / SMYRNA" cachet in
blue. Scarce pair

period and the first real feminine statement in worldwide philately
