weight もっと見る 1880, from DDSG mailbox in Bulgaria to Constantinopel, double weight letter with Persian address, franked with (2) 10 soldi blue fine print (ANK 35), transported by DDSG steamer to Constantinopel and handed over to the Lloyd post office, stamps cancelled with manuscript pen strokes onboard the ship, in smaller or interior towns near the Danube, the DDSG maintained river piers with mailboxes even in places not served by Lloyd post offices, on front the location of the piers is mentioned as ROH near MISTRAH, such letters were often treated as documents and petitions frequently sent on behalf of clients, particularly to officials in Constantinople, routing instruction COSPOLI written on front shows clear intent to reach the Lloyd post office in Constantinople, so the sender knew how the fastest shipping route worked, from Constantinople with Ottoman post via ship to Trebizond (Black Sea) from there with the caravan rout to Teheran and passed on to Isfahan, the Ottoman post made no transit or arrival markings, the letterfront is written in Nasta‘liq Shekasteh, a refined and artistic variant of Persian calligraphy, this script was traditionally reserved for courtly, official, and scholarly correspondence, its use in a foreign postal item suggests the hand of a learned scribe (Munshi) or a representative of elite circles, the addressee is styled with an elaborate sequence of Persian honorifics, it begins with HAZUR, meaning -In the presence of,- a formula for dignitaries, next is FAKHR AL-SADAT JALIL AL-QADR/Pride of the exalted Sayyids, this title highlights noble descent from the Prophet’s family, SIRKAR AGHA follows, a courtly epithet meaning Lord of dignity, the name is SAYYID YAQUB AGHA, the epithet ISFAHANI identifies his origin from the city of Isfahan, together, the address embodies a full spectrum of genealogical, religious, and courtly prestige, this is fascinating postal historical letter to a very unusal destination, VF-XF!
