Express Chinese Camp Decr 15th" oval handstamp with manuscript date (Thomas ADA-106), blue "Adams & Co. Sacramento Dec. 18" double-circle datestamp (Thomas ADA-100) on ca. 1854 buff cover to state assemblyman Mandeville in Sacramento, minor backflap tears VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS ADAMS & COMPANY CHINESE CAMP OVAL HANDSTAMP AND ONE OF THE FINEST WESTERN EXPRESS COVERS WITH THE 1851 ISSUE PAYING POSTAGE. The settlement at Chinese Camp was originally known as "Camp Washington" or "Washingtonville." Some of the Chinese laborers first arriving in California in 1849 were driven from neighboring Camp Salvado and resettled in this location. The area became known as "Chinee," "Chinese Camp" or "Chinese Diggings". At one point, the town was home to an estimated 5,000 Chinese. The Chinese Camp post office was established in the general store on April 18, 1854. This cover was carried by Adams & Co. and is the only example of the Chinese Camp oval handstamp recorded by Thomas. Although government postage was required on express mail as of August 31, 1852, the law was widely ignored until late 1854. Although not year-dated, the use of the 1851 Issue stamp to pay government postage points to December 1854. Illustrated in Letters of Gold. Ex West, Lehman, Baker, Haas, Grunin and Grombacher ("Edwards").
