Remarkably bold red oval handstamp with matching "PAID" below in small italic caps, magenta manuscript "40" transcontinental rate on Oct. 1, 1850 blue folded letter to Waterbury Conn., black "PAID" in arc applied at New York City EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE RARE MERCHANTS EXCHANGE SAN FRANCISCO FORWARDING AGENT'S HANDSTAMP. There were a few different Merchants Exchange businesses in San Francisco during the 1849-1851 period. The marking on this cover could be associated with the firm operated by George Sweeney and Theodore Baugh, and located on Clay Street between Montgomery and Sansome. The firm provided local residents and transients with mail-forwarding service. In a few cases, as shown by this cover, we have clear evidence that the private "Paid" marking and 40-cent rate indicated were satisfactory proof of prepayment when the letter arrived at the New York City post office. The large magenta manuscript "40" rate could be a post office rate marking. Illustrated in Letters of Gold. Ex Haas.
