STEAMER/WINFIELD SCOTT. Two-line handstamp in red clearly struck on
1853 buff cover to Troy Grove Ill., perfectly clear strike of
"Mokelumne Hill Ca. Nov. 25" circular datestamp with "PAID" and 6"
handstamps, prospector's letter enclosed with interesting contents
mentioning find of a four-pound gold nugget EXTREMELY FINE.
ARGUABLY THE FINEST OF THE SEVEN KNOWN COVERS RECOVERED FROM THE
WRECK OF THE PACIFIC MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY STEAMER WINFIELD SCOTT.
The Winfield Scott was a 1,291-ton steamer built in New York City
in 1851, which was put into service along the Pacific Coast route
in 1852. On December 2, 1853, she was stranded off Anacapa Island
in the Santa Barbara Channel and lost, but the mails, passengers
and cargo were saved. Our Levi records contain nine examples of the
two-line handstamp, of which two were carried before the Winfield
Scott was commissioned into the Pacific service. Illustrated in
Letters of Gold and Milgram book. Accompanied by transcripts of the
Alta California articles concerning the wreck and salvage
operation. Ex Jarrett and Schnell ("Schloss", Sale 820). With 1976
P.F. certificate.

Co.circular datestamp (Type II) applied by route agent Bannister
Midgett on blue folded letter datelined "St. Diego Cal. Sept. 3,

S.S." circular datestamps were used between July 1850 and October
1852 on mail handled by route agents aboard ships of the Pacific
Mail Steam Ship Company; while contract mail carried by PMSS Co.
was received in locked bags, letters picked up or processed en
route were postmarked by official route agents on board, as
evidenced by approximately 25 known examples of the rare route
agent markings on covers, ex Goldberg
