Clear margins, tied by indistinct strike of New York circular datestamp, matching "PAID" arc on mourning envelope to South Woodstock Conn., with original enclosure which also has a mourning border, datelined "February 21, 1847" and discusses family matters and recipient's illness, stamp with few faults, some cover wear VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ISSUE ON A MOURNING COVER. A PHENOMENAL RARITY. The USPCS website's comprehensive Postmasters' Provisionals census contains 1,524 entries. This is the only mourning cover listed among them.
