rail to Southampton (1 July) and returned to Buenos Aires, arriving
1 Aug 1883 (62 days). Note: The reason for the refusal to forward
this postal card from England to Queensland is difficult to
determine. This card has imprinted at top “Universal Postal
Universal” for when Argentina joined the UPU in 1878. The card was
only available for delivery to UPU members and since The Australian
Colonies only joined the UPU in 1891, the postal card was thus
refused transmission in England and returned to Argentina

Beautifully bold strike of red circular datestamp on folded letter datelined at Lihue, Kauai, on Mar. 5, 1852, written by Edward Tailer Austin (cousin of Stephen F. Austin) to his cousin S. F. Perry at Peach Point Plantation, Brazoria, Texas, "San Francisco Cal. 1 May" circular datestamp and "12" rate handstamp (10c postage to Texas and 2c ship captain fee), fascinating content chronicling Edward T. Austin's travels to the California gold fields, his labors, losing his fortune and migrating to Hawaii where he worked as a plantation overseer—with lots of additional commentary on Hawaii including Captain Cook's memorial, the "chief power" of the Missionaries, natives, Chinese and climateEXTREMELY FINE USE FROM HAWAII TO TEXAS, WITH EXTRAORDINARY CONTENT FROM A MEMBER OF THE SPANISH TEXAS PIONEER STEPHEN F. AUSTIN FAMILY.The writer, Edward Tailer Austin, was a son of Captain Henry Austin, cousin of Stephen F. Austin, father of Texas. Peach Point Plantation, the address of the letter, was not a Texas post office but a place where Emily Austin Bryan Perry (Stephen F. Austin's sister) and family in Texas called home. The sailing itinerary for this letter is based on dates found in Gregory, Wierenga and Walske-Frajola sailing tables. The British schooner Picard cleared Honolulu March 22, 1852, and arrived in San Francisco April 21. The Panama mails were datestamped May 1 in San Francisco. The next eastbound sailing was the PMSS Columbia, departing May 6 and arriving Panama May 22. After crossing the isthmus, the letter was carried on the USMCS Crescent City, departing May 25 with a stop at New Orleans. From there the letter was carried on a steamer to Texas for final delivery to the Austin family's Peach Point Plantation, located near the Brazos River. Ex Bleuler and King. overland to Alexandria; “Euxine” (5 Dec) via Malta (8 Dec) to
Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles to London, arriving 13 Dec 1864
(52 days). Note: New South Wales temporarily increased the rates
via Marseilles from the 1 July 1864 to the 14 November 1864
becoming 1 s. 4 d for a ½ ounce ship letter via Marseilles. After
this date, the old rate of 10 d. was again resumed. Letters would
have been charged at the higher rates for only four P&O
sailings from Sydney from the July to October monthly voyages.
During the four month period of the temporary rate increase, mail
sent via Southampton during this time was readily available. Thus
mail sent via Marseilles during this period is rare, with only a
few examples recorded. Provenance: Collection Davis, Forster,
Palmer

Overland via Marseilles 1864 (Oct 22): Cover from Hunters Hill, New
South Wales to Locarno, Switzerland bearing 1862 New South Wales
Diadem 6 d. reddish-purple, perf. 13, small tear at top, cancelled
by rays numeral “221” of Hunters Hill (rated RRR in “The Numeral
Cancellations of New South Wales” by Freeman), prepaying 6 d. and
underpaid 1 s. 4 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 10 d. to
Switzerland. “90” (rappen) manuscript in red for internal postage
to be paid by the recipient. Unusually, mail from New South Wales
to Switzerland is very scarce, with the Swiss immigrants following
the Victorian gold rushes and not venturing north over the border.
A small portion of the backflap is missing and minor soiling
confined to reverse, otherwise fine and a very scarce destination
for New South Wales. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 22 Oct
1864 per “Bombay” to Galle (15 Nov); “Simla” (17 Nov) to Suez (3
Dec); overland to Alexandria; “Euxine” (5 Dec) via Malta (8 Dec) to
Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles (11 Dec) to Locarno, arriving
16 Dec 1864 (55 days). Note: The temporary rates increase appears
to have only applied to mail to Great Britain. This envelope was
addressed to Switzerland, and routed via Marseilles which avoided
the British mail system and the potential postage due. However, it
was still grossly underpaid, and not identified by the postal
officials of either New South Wales or Switzerland. Provenance:
Collection Davis, 'Alvarado'

with perf. faults, cancelled by the Sydney duplex. Prepaid 2 s. 2
d. comprising 1 s. 8 d. for a 1 ounce ship letter to England plus 6
d. Supplementary Fee levied after the closure of the mails. Side
flaps missing but generally fine, a very scarce supplementary fee
cover during the perforated Diadem series. Route - Australasian
Steam Navigation Co: Supplementary mail departed Sydney 23 Dec 1863
per “Wonga Wonga” to Melbourne. P&O Line: Departed Melbourne
(26 Dec) per “Northam” to Galle (15 Jan 1864); “Carnatic” (18 Jan)
to Suez (1 Feb); overland to Alexandria; “Massilia” (4 Feb) to
Marseilles (10 Feb); by rail from Marseilles to London arriving 12
Feb 1864 (51 days). Note: During the period 1856-1870, a
Supplementary Mail was generally arranged to catch the mail steamer
service to Melbourne. This was advertised for a period of one to
three days following the departure of the main steamer to
Melbourne. Mail was accepted upon a Late Fee of 6 d. in addition to
the postage. This additional charge was advertised as a
Supplementary Fee. Just seven examples recorded of the
supplementary mail fee via Marseilles between 1863-70. Provenance:

strike もっと見る Honolulu * Hawaiian-Islands * Mar. 13 (1852). Featured in an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum (exhibit card accompanies). With transcription of the letter and background on the family
