Worldwide Thematic Collection – PIGEON MAIL, KITES & GLIDERS, 1898–2010 (15 Exhibition Pages). A fascinating and highly original specialised thematic collection devoted to pigeon post, kite mail and glider experiments, mounted on 15 exhibition pages (including one oversized A3). The assembly comprises ca. 70 items and combines proofs, essays, scarce stamps and remarkable postal history, providing a coherent study of mankind’s earliest airborne communications. Highlights include: 3 artist’s essays, notably original adopted artwork by André Lavergne and rare bird sketches by Nick Shrewring (Bahamas), 4 die proofs, 5 Greece Olympic Games colour proofs (stamp-size, 2 on wove paper, 3 on card), 1898 Great Barrier Island “Pigeon Post” selection (6 unused), French military pigeon post postal history, including: Cover from the Military Pigeon Loft Station, Belfort, bearing the blue boxed “COLOMBIER MILITAIRE BELFORT” handstamp, Postcard dated 18 July 1904 from Military Pigeon Loft Station, 71 Bd. Victor, Paris, with black “Croix Rouge Française – Colombophile” vignette, 1905 “Le Matin” Newspaper Pigeon Post flimsy message actually carried by pigeon, Printed postcard “La Poste par Pigeons” with attached envelope labelled “Message par Pigeon”. Additional worldwide commemorative and pigeon-themed issues, including Mauritania UPU Specimens depicting a pigeon carrying a letter. Condition is generally fine, with many items of significant rarity and exhibition calibre. A superb specialist thematic study on an unusual and appealing subject, combining depth in proofs and essays with scarce pioneer and military pigeon post items. Rarely offered in such a coherent form. Ex. The ‘Izhak Barak’ Collection: The Development of Aviation and Transportation of Mail by Air until 1914.
