Transatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The
American Civil War; 1864 (June 4, datelined): Small cover with
original letter addressed to Captain Burckmyer at Charleston from
his wife in Tours, endorsed "Kindness of Major Pierson", letter no.
45 with the usual cross-written content, handcarried by Mrs.
Bruckmyer's neighbour, Major Pierson, a Frenchman serving in the
Confederate Army via Halifax to Bermuda where loaded onto blockade
runner 'Coquette', arrived Wilmington and hand carried to Richmond
where Major Pierson, having checked into the Spotswood Hotel,
posted the letter with CSA 10 c. blue, Die B (Scott CSA 12) on
back, tied by "RICHMOND Va. JUL 15" circular datestamp. A very fine
incoming blockade-run cover from the Burckmyer correspondence and a
rare use with the 10c General Issue stamp paying the postage to its
destination. Provenance: Collection Steven C. Walske, Robert Siegel
sale 1154 (May 2017), lot 2470.

American Civil War; 1863 (July 29): Unpaid Patriotic envelope of
the Union depicting Eagle and Arms from St. Louis to Villersexel,
Dept. Haute-Saône, endorsed "Voie du Havre", struck by "ST. LOUIS
MO." despatch and "NEW YORK 9 / AUG 1" transit cds's in black as
well as CALAIS entry cds (Aug 14) cds in red, charged with '8'
décimes upon arrival. Reverse with PARIS transit and VILLERSEXEL
arrival (Aug 15) cds's. Sent with the 'City of London' of the Inman
line from New York to Liverpool (Aug 1-12, 1863), a very fine Civil
War cover to a rare destination.

strip of three lettered AH-AJ, used on 1854 cover from Ryde to a
Lieutenant on HMS Queen at Sebastopol endorsed "via Marseilles",
tied by "666" numeral obliterators in black. Ryde despatch cds in
blue on reverse (June 4), London transit and notation of receipt
"Received June 21st" in manuscript. A fine and attractive cover.

Satellite, Rio de Janeiro or elsewhere" and endorsed "French Mail", all tied by "250" numeral obliterators of Devonport. Reverse with Morrice Town cds (Jan 23), Devonport cds (Jan 23) and red London transit cds. Note: HMS Satellite worked the North and Eastern seaboards of America until transferring to the China Station in 1866.

Second Afghan War 1873/80: 6 d. grey, plate 16, a used example on
1879 cover to a Major F. Lance of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry, Field
Force, Kandahar, Afghanistan endorsed "via Brindisi" tied by
"Taunton / 776" duplex (July 31) in black. Carried on the "Venetia"
and dated at Suez with reverse showing "Sea Post Office" code F cds
(Aug 8) and KANDAHAR arrival (Sept 4). Rare and very fine. Note:
Major F. Lance was one of the Officers whose "behaviour was brought
prominently to the notice of their Brigadier Generals" in the
London Gazette of July 30, 1880. He was wounded in 1877 and is
mentioned at length in the "History of the 2nd Punjab Cavalry"
which is available online. At the time of this letter Major Lance
was in the Arghandab Valley (July 22) as squadrons had been split
due to an outbreak of cholera. He remained in the Arghandab valley
(some 250 kms. north west of Quetta) until August 27th.

Honourable Francis Colthorne, Aide de Camp, to Commander in Chief,
Montreal, Canada; with italic framed "Returned for Postage" in red,
transits of London and Liverpool (Oct 30). MONTREAL arrival cds and
struck with both "7d." and "10d. Cy." handstamps in black.
Readdressed to Sevastopol with manuscript "via England to the
Crimea" with framed "COLONIES / & ART. 13" in red reverse with
three French Military arrival datestamps "ARMÉE D'ORIENT / BAU.
GAL." cds's (Dec 10-17). Due to the charges levied the cover marked
"Refusé" on reverse and "Refused" on obverse in manuscript.
Numerous manuscript charge notations, a most unusual cover.

"HMS Odin" of the Baltic Fleet, endorsed "Prepaid 8d.", struck with
poor Swaffham despatch cds in black, London red "Paid" cds (June
20). Small fault at top and some soiling but a scarce incoming
cover to the Fleet.

Inland Office obliterators, but one stamp with fault; also an 1855
stampless cover to Chester endorsed "H.J. Dixon / 7th R.F." (Royal
Fusiliers), struck with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" cds (Feb 13)
in blue with Chester arrival (March 3).

Bombay, India; tied by "London / E30" duplex in black. Mailed as a
Soldier's concession rate cover, but instead presumably returned to
sender with framed "CANNOT BE SENT / EXCEEDS ½ oz" Instructional
handstamp in red with London cds above (June 30). Rare and most
unusual.

Capt. Gayer, 19th Regt. N.I., Sholapore, India endorsed "via
Brindisi", tied by "Romsey / 653" obliterators (March 15) in black.
Carried on the "Zambesi" with three Sholapore arrival datestamps
(April 6-8), redirected to Madras (April 11) and Coonor (April 15)
witth framed "REDIRECTED " and "POSTAGE DUE / 1 ANNA" (deleted) and
framed "POSTAGE DUE / 2 as." applied. Minor imperfections but an
unusual make-up of the 1 shilling rate.

postal stationery card addressed to H.A. Japp of the 67th Regiment
(South Hampshire Regiment), Afghanistan tied by "Winchester / 888"
duplex (Sept 3, 1880). Carried on the "Verona" with "Sea Post
Office" code C datestamp (Sept 9) applied at Suez, the card
readdressed initially to Rawalpindi with cds (Sept 29) and thence
to Murree (Sept 31) with all cancels on obverse. An unusual and
scarce usage.

A fine and scarce group.

Commanding at lower left, with manuscript "1" (penny) paid in red
and "PAID / MALTA" in black (MSP-1b) - the latest recorded use.
