Forces cover, franked with 2c Washington definitive tied by U.S.
Postal Agency, Managua, Nicaragua duplex cancellation, with
manuscript endorsement “Marine Occupation Forces” at top and
reverse notation indicating origin from Capt. Phipps Column, 5th
Co., 11th Reg’t, Ocotal, Nicaragua, a desirable example of U.S.
Marine correspondence during the American occupation of Nicaragua,
part of the broader “Banana Wars” period.

1895, 10 cents deep claret, both fresh colour, mostly good
perforations, the former tied by Corinto upright barred oval, the
latter by indistinct oval, to an envelope sent to San Francisco,
USA, manuscript “2” in blue crayon, with unframed “U.S. CHARGE 10
CENTS TO COLLECT”. Reverse, transit cds “SAN DIEGO CA SEP 5 99” and
faint arrival cds “SAN FRANCISCO SEP 7 99”. US left side straight
edge. Fine. Note: The “2” applied in San Diego - indicating the
envelope was discovered to be ‘double-weight’ - charged double the
base rate, ignoring Nicaragua's maritime surcharge.

1930 (April 24): First Flight Cover on FAM 5, signed by Charles
Lindbergh. Airmail envelope franked with Nicaragua 1914/23 issue
adhesives (faults top and tone spots), tied by rectangular barred
cancels with violet circular Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, 24 ABR 1930
handstamp, addressed to Cristóbal, Canal Zone. Carried on the Pan
American Airways FAM 5 Miami–Cristóbal service, on the southbound
flight via Nicaragua, arriving Cristóbal 27 April 1930 (backstamp).
The cover bears the bold autograph of Charles A. Lindbergh at right
to front, who piloted the flight, and is countersigned verso by
Herald Blix. Ex-collection Otto Kalli, a noted airmail and pioneer
flight collector. Cover is soilied. An outstanding and rare
Nicaragua flight cover from the inaugural Central American
extension of FAM 5, enhanced by the Lindbergh signature. Signed by
A. Bolaffi. Provenance: ex Otto Kalli collection.
