Tibet. Yunnan. 1918 (12 Feb.) opened-out envelope to the French
Consul in Yunnanfu bearing, on the reverse, Junk 8c. (2, one
largely missing) tied by Atuntse c.d.s. with a very fine strike of
the boxed registered handstamp numbered "34", Likiang (20.2) and
Yunnanfu (28.2) arrival c.d.s. and showing Likiang and Yunnanfu
boxed "inspected, no damage" handstamps. A rare cover and probably
the earliest extant registered cover from Atuntse. Photo (Estimate

combination paying the 4tr. rate (apparently not including the

stampless cover, struck with ornate seal of the Kerong Court in
Tibet, carried via runner to the Nepalese Post Office in Rasuwa,
with Sun and Moon c.d.s., small court official oval handsrtamp,
minor faults and typical wrinkling, a pleasing cover with all
markings on the same side, very fine. Under the Thapatail Treaty of
1855, Nepalese courts were established in the Tibetan towns of
Khasa, Kuti, and Kurong, to handle legal cases involving Nepalese
citizens. Mail from these courts was struck with the appropriate
court seal, and carried with free-franking privileges by couriers
to nearby Nepalese border towns.

reverse, ½tr. lilac tied by Gyantse type 1 postmark in black with a
good strike of the Gyantse registered handstamp type T71 plus five
black wax seals of Achmandas Ramchandra, Bankers, Gyantse; a
segment of the side has been removed on opening. A good cover.

ornate seal of the Kerong Court in Tibet, carried by runner to the
Nepalese Post Office at Rasuwa, with Sun and Moon c.d.s., one year
earlier than the currently documented earliest recorded date, very
fine examples of these scarce strikes. Under the Thapatail Treaty
of 1855, Nepalese courts were established in the Tibetan towns of
