Scandinavian Corps, with a 4 and two 8 Ore cancelled Nakskov FE 01.
The cover was censored on arrival in St Helena. The Scandinavian
Corps was formed in Pretoria on 12 October 1899, the day after war
was declared. Officers and NCO’s of the various Scandinavian
nationals were elected and Christensen was elected Sergeant of the
Danish Troop. He, along with 47 members of the Scandinavian Corps,
was captured at Paardeberg with General Cronje on 27 February 1900.
An exceptionally rare incoming cover to a member of the Danish
Contingent – much rarer than outgoing

dull orange, single and horizontal pair, each with good to large
margins and 1857 Emblem 2 d. pale lilac, touched at left, cancelled
by barred numeral “1” of Melbourne, prepaying 1 s. 8 d. for a ½
ounce ship letter to Sweden. Manuscript “32” (skilling) at left and
italic “36s BCO” handstamp in black for ship letter inwards fees to
be paid by the recipient. Some minor blemishes and pressed filing
crease, however very rare, being the third earliest cover recorded
from Victoria to Sweden. Illustrated in colour in “The Pre-UPU
Destination Mail of Victoria” by Ben Palmer on Colour Plate 12.

Overland via Marseilles 1858 (July 16): Entire from Melbourne,
Victoria to Gotheborg, Sweden bearing 1854 Victoria Woodblock 6 d.
dull orange with four margins, cancelled by barred numeral “1” of
Melbourne and prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 1 s. 2 d. for a ½ ounce
ship letter of 1 s. 8 d. to Sweden. Struck with “DETAINED FOR “1/2”
POSTAGE” handstamp in black representing the underpayment and
“1Rdr.24sBCO” in black for the postage to be paid by the recipient.
The part pre-payment of 6 d. was not accepted by the Swedish postal
authorities and the entire was taxed as completely unpaid. Transit
datestamps of Melbourne, 'Australie V. Suez', Paris, Hamburg and
Gothenburg. A remarkable taxed cover from the Australian Colonies,
unrecorded by Ben Palmer, being the fourth earliest cover from
Victoria to Sweden. It is believed that there are just three
examples recorded of this Swedish tax handstamp. Fine and very
rare. Route - European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed
Melbourne per “Emeu” 16 July 1858 via Galle (7 Aug) to Suez;
overland to Alexandria. P&O Line: “Teviot” (26 Aug) to Malta
(30 Aug) Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Wye” (30 Aug) to Marseilles (2
Sept); by rail via Paris to Hamburg (5 Sept); by steamer to
Gothenburg (9 Sept); overland to Stahla, arriving 11 Sept 1858 (160
days). Note: This cover was detained at the Melbourne G.P.O. from
the 4 April until the addressee had prepaid the additional 1 s. 2
d. (in manuscript within the 'Detained' handstamp). However, the
additional amount should have been 1 s. 8 d. for a total of 2 s. 2
d. via Marseilles. The additional 1 s. 2 d. only prepaid the letter
via Southampton
