1858: 20 kop. blue & orange perf. 12½, a fresh and fine example
cancelled by clear and central strike of dotted '777' truncated
triangle numeral of Batum (Tchilinghirian fig. 87). A rare numeral
issued for use in 1862 at Batum, at that time an office abroad, as
Batum became part of the Russian Empire after the 1877/78
Russo-Turkish War. Never seen by the describer and also described
in Tchilinghirian as 'no examples recorded yet'.

from もっと見る Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1875 (April 1): Cover from Jeisk, Russia to Adelaide, South Australia bearing 1866 Russia 1 k. black & yellow, 5 k. black & lilac and 20 k. orange & blue, horizontally laid paper, perf. 14½, cancelled by two line "Jeisk" datestamps in black, prepaying 26 kopeks for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to South Australia. On the reverse are Russian TPO, Venice and Brindisi cds's, with a faint Adelaide arrival datestamp on obverse. Some minor cover imperfections but an extremely rare destination for Russian classic period mail and one of the earliest covers to this destination recorded. Certs. Vaccari (2019) and RPSL (2021). Route: Departed Russia 1 April 1875 by rail via Venice (16 April) to Brindisi (17 April). P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (19 April) per “Sumatra” to Alexandria (22 April); “Mongolia” (22 April) via Suez Canal to Galle (7 May); “Nubia” (8 May) via King Georges Sound (22 May) to Adelaide, arriving 27 May 1875 (57 days). Note: This cover is addressed to Frederick Wigg whose family founded the Adelaide bookshop of E.S. Wigg & Son. They were the largest booksellers in South Australia, expanding their business to the other colonies with the company still operating today

1878: Arms 2 kopeks black & red, two singles, fresh colour, some
perforations flaws, in combination with Arms 8 kopeks grey & rose,
good colour, odd short perforation on the left side, used on
envelope from St. Petersburg to Montreal, Canada, dated 8 June
1878, tied by ST. PETERSBURG cds, with LONDON PAID transit red
transit mark (24 JU 78), paying the double 12 k. rate to Canada via
the UK, alongside red “1½” credit marking indicating the special UK
concession to Russia, eliminating double transit charges. Reverse
with embossed flap 'Nichols & Splincke St. Petersburg'. One of the
2 k. has fault at base. Creasing to envelope clear of adhesives and
there is paper adhesion to back. Rare example. Believed to be the
only recorded example of prepaid mail from Russia to Canada during
the brief concessionary arrangement prior to Canada’s entry into
the GPU on 1 July 1878. An outstanding postal history rarity of the
Russian foreign mails and Canadian inbound mails.
