Wreck Mail 1947 (July 22): Cover with 1947 4 c. blue block of four
endorsed "per R.M.S. Nascopie, Baffin Sound", which ran ashore on
the South East corner of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic on
July 22, 1947 on her journey to re-supply Hudsons Bay Company
outposts. The mail was saved and blue label applied "This mail was
received in damaged / condition, being salvaged from the / wreck of
R.M.S. Nascopie - lost at / Cape Dorset..." and cancelled by
"Stirling / Ont." cds (Aug 13) in black.

re-used with previous fragments beneath. This 9d, was equivalent of
36c. rate, cancelled by ‘43’ numeral obliterators, endorsed “Via
Brandesi” but carried via Southampton rather than Brindisi with Feb

stamp whilst the bottom stamp has damge at base. A striking cover.

Noted is a registered 1899 envelope sent to Sierra Leone franked with set of the eight values tied by double strikes of the barred circle pineapple cancel in black, with large 'R' in oval, neatly preseneted upon exhibition pages with a selection of stamps (8) with similar postmarks including a Cameo 2 d. block of four. Also, a 1902 printed Compagnie Français de l'Afrique Occidentale envelope sent registered to Switzerland franked with ½ d. and 1 s. pair tied by a Registered / Gambia dated oval code B, with large 'R' alongside, has vertical fold and creases caused by the original 4½ ounce content, otherwise fine and a scarce rate. The OHMS is sent to hull in 1899 franked with 4 d. and 6 d. tied by barred circle with London hooded circle registered alongside. Overall a fine group with the odd fault as would be expected. 1944 censored picture post card (Beach at Vigie) to England with a
block of four ½d’s, paying the 2d post card rate, cancelled
CASTRIES 26 AP 44. The card was censored twice, by the St Lucia
examiner I.T.T. / 6 and then by the military censor No. 9000 where
it also received a censors’ signature. The octagonal I.T.T. / -
censor handstamp was used for post cards. Tweddell only records 10
examples known

Excellent strike of the “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE /DEFICIENT POSTAGE” blank handstamp in black applied in London. “1/-” manuscript in black representing the deficient postage via Brindisi. Some minor closed cover tears but of great rarity. Four covers recorded from the Australian Colonies with the blank Deficient Postage handstamp, one is from New South Wales and the other three emanate from Victoria. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 11 Sept 1870 per “Avoca” to Galle (2 Oct); “Candia” (4 Oct) to Suez (20 Oct); overland to Alexandria.
