Tristan da Cunha: 1945 (May 15) incoming cover from South Africa
addressed to “Flight Sgt John Kirby, H.M.S. Atlantic Isle, c/o
Fleet Mail Officer, Cape Town”, bearing 2d. bantam, with original
letter, roughly opened. The name Tristan da Cunha was temporarily
abolished during the war for security reasons and replaced with the
designation “H.M.S. Atlantic Isle” in 1944. Ex Edinburgh

circulated from Johannesburg (08.08.39) to Salisbury by Imperial
Airways with connection to RANA flight to Tete (10.07.39), franked
with 1 ½ p stamp, Yv77. There is controversy as to whether these
letters sent from Johannesburg were carried on this flight, as
according to some scholars only a dozen letters dated 3 July and
from Salisbury were sent, stamped with the Tete arrival stamp on
10.07. However, the truth is that the letter that left Johannesburg
on 8 July bears the Tete cancellation of 10.07 on the back, just
like those sent from Salisbury

The printed Red Cross on card obviously in a softer red colour, wings emblem in Red Cross in dark blue and shifted to right. An interesting variety on card used to Australia.

1931 cover to Otjiwarongo bearing a 1d tied by a fine strike of the
rare OTJIKURURUME datestamp of 11. 3. 31. On the reverse are
Okahandja 12 MAR and Otjiwarongo 14 MAR 31 transit and arrival
cancels. This postal agency on Farm 213 in the Okahandja district
opened in April 1925 and closed in August 1932. It is rare and the
only one I have seen in over 30 years

1926 Imperial Airways Survey Flight post card to Johannesburg,
produced by “Flight” magazine with their red vignette unusually
applied to the front of the card (instead of the reverse as was
usual). This was tied by an oval "BY SPECIAL AIR MAIL / 16-1-25 /
LONDON / CAPE TOWN" cachet. A Kings Head 2d stamp has been
cancelled CAPE TOWN 23 FEB 26. Cobham’s signature is on the back of
the card. A very fine example of this card, posted 6 days after
Cobham had arrived in Cape Town from his flight from London and 3
days before he flew back to London.
