War Cyane Via Acapulco" with notation on verso "Received May 25th, Answered 1861"; heavy linen lined cover which must have held several lettersheets to warrant the 40 cent rate in 1861, opened top and left, Very Fine and attractive. Estimate; $400 - 600. The USS "Cyane" was a sloop-of-war in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War. It was used on the coasts of North and South America until its retirement in 1871

handstamped "SPECIMEN" in black; and an 1899 cover bearing 1898
Trans-Mississippi 5 c. blue boldly tied by "MIL. STA. No. 1

impression, tied by three clear strikes of blue "10" numeral
handstamp, struck again at top right, partly readable strike of
matching "Brownsville Tex." circular datestamp on grayish blue
folded letter datelined "Brownsville 17 Mai 1850" and addressed to
the Consul of France in New Orleans, some slight wear, stamps with
manuscript cancels removed (perhaps re-used)VERY FINE APPEARANCE.
THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE FROM
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS, AND ONE OF ONLY SIX confirmed 5-CENT 1847
covers FROM ANY TEXAS POST OFFICE.According to United States 1847
Issue: A Cover Census by Thomas J. Alexander, Texas received 7,900
5c stamps and 6,550 10c stamps.The U.S. Classics Society 1847
census lists 15 covers from Texas post offices with the 1847 Issue
(not counting one unconfirmed cover without a photo). Six have 5c
stamps and nine have 10c stamps. This is the only 5c cover from
Brownsville—only one other from this post office is recorded,
bearing a single 10c stamp.USPCS census no. 13697. Ex Knapp, Dr.
Kapiloff and our 2005 Rarities of the World sale (where acquired by

back, accompanied by 1875 U.S. silver dollar with Chinese chop
marks, right stamp light crease at top right, Very Fine and scarce
use from Ningpo, carried by consular courier to Shanghai, silver
dollars were sent to China after the crash in prices of silver,
Chinese merchants would add their chop marks after verifying their
purity, ex Frajola and "Magnolia"

sending U.S. money, as well as personal family issues (a printed
transcript of the letter accompanies), entered U.S. mail with red
"New Orleans La. Jun. 9" (1838) circular datestamp, matching "SHIP"
handstamp and red manuscript "27" rate (25c plus 2c ship fee), ink

TRANSATLANTIQUE/PAR BATEAUX A VAPEUR" HANDSTAMP.In 1842 Dr. Ashbel
Smith traveled to Europe as the Republic of Texas charge d'affaires
(and plenipotentiary) to Great Britain and France. During this
trip, Dr. Smith secured ratification of treaties between Great
Britain and Texas. In France he worked to improve diplomatic
relations following the 1841 "Pig War," a dispute between
governments that erupted after a French diplomat ordered the
slaughter of a local settler's pigs, which the Frenchman claimed
had invaded his stable and home. Dr. Smith also encouraged the
Europeans to impede Mexican threats to invade Texas, and he
investigated the antislavery advocates' position toward the
republic. While in Europe, Dr. Smith received correspondence from
Texas. Although this cover has no contents, the write-up by a
previous owner states that it originated in Austin, Texas, and
carried news of the capture of San Antonio in September 1842 by
Mexican forces under General Adrian Woll.Per the sender's
directive, this letter was carried from New York to Europe on the
British Queen, a former British steamship that was sold to the
Belgian government in August 1841 for service on the
Antwerp-Cowes-New York route that started in May 1842. The service
was unsuccessful and only a few round trips were made before it was
terminated. An article in the Transatlantic Study Group newsletter
(No. 59, Oct. 1997, PDF provided online) provides sailing data that
lists the British Queen departing New York on October 7, 1842, and
arriving in Southampton on November 3 and Antwerp on November 4.
The red "Anvers" datestamp corresponds with the sailing data. We
have been unable to verify a statement from a previous owner that
only two examples of the "NAVIGATION TRANSATLANTIQUE/PAR BATEAUX A
VAPEUR" handstamp are known. James van der Linden states that there
are six recorded British Queen covers carried on the sailings to
and from Belgium, and only one with the red framed
handstamp.Illustrated in Ter Braake, Texas: The Drama of its Postal
