Romanian Post, Treaty with Austria; 1870 (Nov 11): Cover from
Bucharest to Langnau, Switzerland, bearing 1869 Prince Carol
‘without beard’ 10 bani blue and 25 bani orange & blue, fine
margined examples, tied by early usage of the BUCURESCI thimble
datestamp struck in black (Kiriac fig. 488). Framed 'P.D.'
alongside and reverse with WIEN and BURGDORF transit cds’s as well
as LANGNAU arrival cds (Nov 17). The weiterfranco of ‘10’ kreuzer
beyond Romania was noted in red crayon on front, changed into ‘4’
(kreuzer) for Switzerland by the Austrian office. A most attractive
cover from a well-known correspondence to a cheese dealer in the
Emmental in Switzerland. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on
page 140, cert. Heimbüchler (2006). Note: Following the Romanian -
Austrian Postal convention of 24 July 1868, coming into force on 1
April 1869 mail abroad including transit mail could be conveyed
from Romanian offices. The rate to Switzerland was 10 bani for
Romania, 6 kreuzer (= 15 bani) for Austria and 4 kreuzer (= 10
bani) for Switzerland. Provenance: Corinphila sale 191 (November
2014), lot 1472.

frame もっと見る 1869: Prince Carol I (beardless) 10 b. blue, close to touching frame on lower right side otherwise four margins, 25 b. orange & blue, tight at top right side otherwise good to very large margins all round and part of side marginal right, both fresh vibrant colour, used on a mourning letter from Bucharest to Geneva, Switzerland, dated 11 October 1870, neatly tied by a single strike of the BUCAREST cds. (11 OCT 70) in black, with framed P.D. alongside. On reverse, Vienna transit WIEN 15/10 and Geneva arrival GENEVE 17/10 datestamps in black. Top letter fold just affecting marginal edge of 25 b. which doesn't detract from the visual appearance. Impressive combination, rare with such good margins, highly attractive and scarce franking on mourning letter.

Cover without content from Craiova to the Cheese dealer Joost in
Langnau, bearing 1871 Prince Carol 5 bani carmine (2), two fresh
and fine examples with good to large margins, tied by light
double-circle "CRAIOVA DIM" datestamp in blue, reverse with
"ALT-ORSOVA" and BURGDORF transit cds's as well as LANGNAU arrival
cds (Jan 28). File folds well away from the franking, nevertheless
a fine and fresh printed matter, only two reported to Switzerland,
illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 139, cert.

Framed 'P.D.' alongside overstruck by "AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" handstamp, reverse with Swiss "B.P. ROMANSHORN - BERN" TPO and LANGNAU arrival cds (Sept 20). The letter was underpaid by 10 bani and finally taxed with 45 rappen with the unpaid letter rate of 70 bani minus 25 bani franking resulting in a difference of 45 bani equal to 45 rappen with both currencies being part of the Latin currency union. A fine cover from a well-known correspondence to a cheese dealer in the Emmental in Switzerland. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 141.
