Post Offices of the Fjord - Post Offices located on the Overland
Routes; 1865 (July 18): Envelope from Lærdal to Dublin, bearing
1856/57 Oscar 3 sk. grey in a vertical pair in combination franking
with 1863/64 Vapen 24 sk. brown, overall fine and fresh examples,
tied by LÆRDAL cds with crisp information strike, "P.D." in red
from Aachen, CHRISTIANIA (July 21) and "LONDON PAID" (July 26)
transit cds's alongside. Reverse with transit cds's from SANDØSUND
(July 22), "KDOPA HAMBURG" (July 24), and "H&K PACT" (July 26)
of the Holyhead & Kingstown Packet to Ireland. First intended to be
sent directly via Hull the cover made its journey via the
continent, the Prussian post noted '5' (Silbergroschen) credit
beyond. Some perforation and toning, cover wrinkles of the delicate
thin cover paper, nevertheless an appealing and most interesting

Post Offices of the Fjord - Post Offices established due to new
routes, the 1855 route Vangen - Urland/Aurland; 1867 (July 29):
Cover Urland to Dublin, Ireland bearing 1863/64 Vapen 4 sk. blue in
a horizontal strip of six (Facit 8) tied by URLAND cds, BERGEN
transit (July 30), "LONDON PAID" transit (Aug 6) cds's as well as
oval "P.D." in red alongside, reverse with "HAMBURG ST. P." (March
4) transit cds and oval "NORWEGEN / direct" (vdL 2045), both struck
in blue at the Hamburg city post office and "H & K PACT" (Aug 6) of
the Holyhead and Kingston steam packet service in black. Front
shows "4½" (Silbergroschen) weiterfranko in blue crayon of the
Prussian mail for the services beyond. Due to the thin paper some
wrinkles and toning, nevertheless one of few covers to Ireland in
this period and the only known cover recorded with this adhesive's
combination, a very rare cover abroad from such a small office. The
lot includes in addition an 1872 cover to Gudvangen bearing 1867/68
3 sk. violet (Facit 13) showing for comparison the use of the
AURLAND cds after the village had been renamed in 1869. Provenance:
