1872/73 (Dated 1289): 6 Shahi reddish purple on yellowish soft wove
paper, a used example, position 3 on the sheet of four subjects,
with good margins all round, used on cover from Peshawar via Khulm
/ Tashkurgan to Bokhara, Uzbekistan addressed and paid to the
border (where it would have been carried on by merchant caravan);
cancelled by an excellent strike of the circular Peshawar intaglio
seal handstamp (inverted) in oily black ink. An extremely rare and
most attractive cover. Signed Todd AIEP. Note: The address side
reads "To Khulm to the Serai of Mellah ismail to be delivered to
Mullah Farid Moher-on-din paranjeh and from there to Bohkara,
Postage paid from Mian Mohammed Amin and Mian Abdul Hamid Sahaf".
Note 2: This cover is illustrated in "Afghanistan 1870-1900, 2nd
Edition" by Robert Jack on page 90. Provenance: Collection Major
Adrian E. Hopkins MC., Robson Lowe, Zurich, 19 May 1988, lot 3418;

the small Pope correspondence is the only mail known from this
theatre of the War. Note: The Vitakri Field Force's task was to
control the passes in South East Afghanistan. This was during the
hottest period of the year and both the weather and an outbreak of
scurvy proved debilitating. The Force was withdrawn at the end of
the year. Provenance: DF, Geneva, 4 Dec 2002, ex lot 10078.
