"BRITISH VICE-CONSULATE / ANTANANARIVO" in violet, an unused
complete sheet of four, each stamp more or less stained where the
gum would have been placed, two marginal imperfections at base,
otherwise fine. Ex the "San Francisco Find", an extremely rare
multiple Gi = £ 5'200+. Note: In 1899 W.C. Pickersgill, the British
Vice-Consul in Antananarivo, was ailing with "Madagascar Fever" and
was reposted to the milder climes of San Francisco. Despite
loathing "timbro-maniacs", he took with him a small group of
Consular Mail stamps in sheets. These he sold to an unknown dealer
in San Francisco probably upon his arrival but certainly before his
death there on 20 July 1901. The multiples later suffered during
the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The stamps reappeared many
years later to George Holschauer at a "Westpex" show, fused
together by heat and water from the ensuing fires and fire
fighting, some were saved by an art conservator.
