Post Offices of the Fjord - Post Offices located on the Overland
Routes; 1865 (July 18): Envelope from Lærdal to Dublin, bearing
1856/57 Oscar 3 sk. grey in a vertical pair in combination franking
with 1863/64 Vapen 24 sk. brown, overall fine and fresh examples,
tied by LÆRDAL cds with crisp information strike, "P.D." in red
from Aachen, CHRISTIANIA (July 21) and "LONDON PAID" (July 26)
transit cds's alongside. Reverse with transit cds's from SANDØSUND
(July 22), "KDOPA HAMBURG" (July 24), and "H&K PACT" (July 26)
of the Holyhead & Kingstown Packet to Ireland. First intended to be
sent directly via Hull the cover made its journey via the
continent, the Prussian post noted '5' (Silbergroschen) credit
beyond. Some perforation and toning, cover wrinkles of the delicate
thin cover paper, nevertheless an appealing and most interesting
cover to Ireland. Cert. Aune (2000). Provenance: Postiljonen AB

Routes; 1882 (July 20): Telegram telegraphed from Christiania to
LAERDAL and sent registered by steamer to Amble, bearing 1877
Posthorn 20 øre brown (Facit 29) paying the registered letter rate,
tied by crisp LÆRDAL cds, an information strike and "NB" in blue
crayon as well as straight-line "Recommanderet" alongside. The only
recorded franked and forwarded telegram with the first shaded
Posthorn Øre issue.

Postal Services prior to 1836 - The Bergen-Christiania and
Bergen-Molde routes; 1751 (June 11): Entire letter from Bergen to
the Royal Magistrate at the Sande farm in the middle part of the
Sognefjorden area, an official letter endorsed with monogram and
"F5tus" (King Frederik V of Denmark and Norway), showing its
official character and therefore sent free of charge. Date of
writing noted inside. Note: The earliest letter recorded to the
Sognefjorden area, sent overland to the post office in Frønningen,
taken out of the post bag, then either picked up in Frønningen or
sent to the other side of the fjord by occassion.

Postal Services prior to 1836 - The Challenge with the Overland
routes; 1804/15: Group of two official Entire letters sent between
the two extremes of the Sognefjord, incl. 1805 eastbound from
Breche to Sogndal sent first on the Molde-Bergen and then on the
Bergen-Christiania route and thereby bypassing the Fjord area in a
long detour, the other 1815 westbound from Vig via Frømmingen and
Bergen to Breche, a journey of 350 km for a distance of 60km. The
lot includes also two 1804 Entire letters / Documents with time
sheets for the postman's tour, a measure to ensure moderate mail
delays.

1847/61: もっと見る The Transition Period 1836-1858 - Routing of Domestic Mail; 1847/61: Selection of twelve primarily prephilatelic / stampless covers / entires incl. 1856 cover Bergen to Evindvig at the mouth of the fjord but directed to the port of call in Skjaergehamn, bearing a fine and fresh 1855 Vapen tied by BERGEN (18 / 8 1856) cds, two covers in the Bergen - Sognefjorden connection, two 1852 covers sent during the winter overland to the inner part of the fjord, incoming mail from outside the Sogne area and redistributed in Bergen or other ports of call such as Lervig or Lærdal, mail to northern Norway either along the coast in summer or via Stockholm and Haparanda in Sweden in winter. An impressive ensemble pointing to the importance of the Sogne area for mail distribution between northern and southern Norway.

Routes; 1848/79: Selection ten Entire letters / Covers from the
post offices of Lærdal, Evendvig, and Lervig, established between
1760 and 1808, incl. LÆRDAL 1853 money letter to Songdal, 1858 to
Christiania bearing Oscar 4 sk tied by crisp three-ring '192'
numeral, 1869 double rate entire and 1876 single rate to Aurland;
EVENDVIG, an 1848 unpaid and an 1852 paid entire letter as well as
two 1869 / 1879 covers franked with Vapen 4 sk. and money letter
with Posthorn 10 øre (2), the adhesives tied by three-ring '62'
numerals; finally LERVIG 1858 paid letter to Songdal and 1872 cover
bearing 10 øre tied by pristine LERVIG cds. A most attractive
ensemble.
