The site, on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River about six miles upriver from the new international boundary, was judged to be a good position for observing and thwarting military movements on the river and was described by Wilkinson as the 'most southerly tenable position within our limits.' It was named Fort Adams for the sitting President"

furlough for the writer's son, extensive docketing inside in
magenta pen traces its journey from Adjutant General Roger Jones
(including signed by him), referral by military mail to Monterrey,
Mexico and General John E. Wool, who also signed it and then sent
it to Col. Hamtramck, who signed it and referred it back to General
Wool, seeing no merit in the request, finally returned to Rep.
Thompson, Very Fine, a fascinating piece of Mexican-American War
history, encompassing a number of prominent figures: Representative
Thompson later served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior and
Inspector General of the Confederate Army; General Wool served in
each of the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Indian Wars and
Civil War; General Jones was the longest serving Adjutant General
in U.S. Army History (and father of Catesby ap Roger Jones); Col.
Hamtramck also served in the War of 1812 and was the son of John
Francis Hamtramck, a Canadian-born Continental Army officer during
the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War, when
the elder Hamtramck died in 1803 future President William Henry
Harrison became the boy's temporary guardian

include "A plan is in agitation with our friend E. Williams to
furnish the Army with new ponies at terms advantageous...", slight
waterstaining, otherwise Fine, a rare and historical letter to
Isaac Guion, despite the 1795 Treaty of San Lorenzo (Pinckney
Treaty) ceding the territory to the United States from Spain, the
handover was not without incident or speedy, Guion, a Revolutionary
War veteran, led troops into Natchez in December 1797 and in early
1798 accepted the surrender of Fort Panmure, thus taking control
for the United States

THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED STRAIGHTLINE OF ANY STYLE FROM NATCHEZ.
While the larger format straightlines with capitalized "NATCHEZ",
beginning in 1805, are known in some quantity, this is the only
example of this small style straightline we have encountered and it
may well be unique. The 1997 American Stampless Cover Catalog lists
this as the earliest recorded example and the Mississippi postmarks
book lists Dec. 23, 1802 as both the earliest and latest known
date.
