May 8th, 1945 is the most significant date of the 20th century. On this day, the world began to change. The „GREAT GERMAN REICH“ had capitulated.
The 3rd Reich era had sunk into rubble and ashes. The guns fell silent in Europe. World War II was over. 60 million dead were the price. May 8th, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of this memorable day. This date is a special reminder of the darkest 12 years of German history, just like the German capital Berlin, which has declared this day a public holiday. We have therefore chosen 9 May 2025 for a special auction.
This offer is an opportunity to present unknown details to an international public.
This gives historians new opportunities to study the history of the years 1933 - 1945. The material shown in the catalogue also gives historians extensive possibilities. Many depictions on the objects ensure that things from the „Hitler era“ are not forgotten. This auction catalogue is therefore a unique history book.
From a philatelic point of view, highlights are thrown on items in which German history from 1933-1945 takes centre stage. Volume 1 of the documentation ‘Thema 3. Reich’ provides detailed information on the provenance of the items on offer.
On May 9th the auction house Schlegel, Berlin, will be auctioning the historically most important collection of designs, essays and proofs for the stamp images created by German artists during the Third Reich. The auction will feature 288 different items. The predicate UNIQUE applies to this object.
This unprecedented auction includes an introduction to familiarise you with the subject matter.
We are auctioning 288 treasures of German philately for which there are no catalogue numbers as they cannot exist.
Before the printers can start production, artists work to create the necessary conditions. Graphic artists, designers, painters, photographers, paper and colour experts, steel engravers and art printers work in the work area known as „pre-production“.
It is a long way from the artists‘ first motif drafts to final artwork and photo essays to the proofs. Stamp collectors are not privy to the activities of this period. The „end product“ is given a catalogue number
much later. This is the stamp after it has been sold at the post office counter.
The contents of this auction are the unique treasures from the pre-production work area - a generally unknown area that attracts enthusiastic buyers.
Specialist collectors have long recognised that preproduction valuables are a crucial addition to any specialist collection.
The two volumes „Thema 3. Reich“ offer for the first time published knowledge about artists and backgrounds and about stamp design in the 3rd Reich.
Explanatory words on the special auction on May 9th, 2025:
The fact that this auction could take place began immediately after World War II in Vienna. If you would like to find out more about the circumstances, you can do so in Volume 1 of the documentation „Thema 3 .Reich“.
Here is a brief statement:
The first owner of the collection - with very few exceptions - was the Viennese publisher Emanuel Fiscus. Fiscus came into possession through his connections to the Soviet occupying power.
The entire collection of technology and printed matter from the Vienna State Printing Office was considered spoils of war after the conquest.
Please note:
The auction is organised in the same order as in the volumes ‘Thema 3. Reich’. The German and English descriptions largely correspond to those in the two volumes. Some of the descriptions are even more detailed.
