example of fresh, deep colour and ample to good margins (showing
Plate Flaw, with horizontal line running from outside the left
margin across the first "R" of CORREOS, top half of "L" of COLON
and through "N" of FRANCO), neatly tied by clear target handstamp
with red "Santiago" despatch cds (Sept. 29) to 1855 entire letter
to Bordeaux (France), endorsed "por el Vapor", struck on reverse
with double line "PANAMA TRANSIT" and French entry cds "ANGL. AMB.
CALAIS J 14 NOV" in black on obverse. A remarkable and fine usage
paying the internal rate to Valparaiso, thence via PSNC steamer to
Panama and rated "21" centimes upon arrival in France. Signed

with 1862 20 c. green, three large margins; used on 1864 entire
letter from Santiago to New York endorsed "pr. Chile" (PSNC vessel)
tied by "CANCELLED" barred obliterator in black. Large "Santiago /
Chile" despatch cds at right (Sept 16) in red, three line PANAMA /
TRANSIT in black and struck on arrival with "34" (cents) handstamp
in black with blue crayon "24" for British share. The 20 centavos

headed ...more Incoming Mail via Pacific Ocean 1859 (23 July): Entire letter headed Valparaiso, Chile mailed via New South Wales to Hong Kong, carried as a private consignees letter from Chile to Sydney where a New South Wales 1859 Diadem 6 d. fawn, imperforate with three large margins was affixed and tied by a “N.S.W.” in ovals handstamp in black, prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Hong Kong. Endorsed “Via Australia” at lower left and manuscript “4” (cents) for the Hong Kong ship letter inwards fee. On the reverse is a shipping forwarders handstamp “CROSS & Co. / VALPARAISO” in blue with transit datestamps for Sydney and Hong Kong. Very fine and exceptionally rare. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Valparaiso 23 July 1859 per “Lizzie Spaulding” to Sydney. Departed Sydney (4 Nov) per “Helios” to Hong Kong, arriving 18 Dec 1859. Note: The contents are remarkable and relate to the trade of flour between Chile and China. “The flour market, during the past year - which we expected from the good crop would have ruled low - has been irregular, and affected by the Revolution which disturbed the whole country from January to May. Some of the crop has been destroyed by military movements, and some are gathered and left in the interior so as not to be available for shipment, until the wet season passes, and the roads become good...” The 1859 Chilean Revolution was an armed rebellion by the Chilean Liberals against the conservative government of President Manuel Montt. The revolution took place from January 5 to May 21, 1859, and ended in failure, with 5,000 people killed. It was the second attempt by the Liberals to overthrow the government, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1851. The earliest recorded cover from Chile to the Australian Colonies and exceptional usage as a forwarded cover to Hong Kong. Provenance: Collection Blank, Forster

mourning ...more Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1875: Registered mourning envelope from Valparaiso, Chile to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1865 Great Britain 4 d. vermillion, pl. 14; 1867 2 s. dull blue and 1873 3 d. rose, pl. 12, two examples, (Gibbons Z63+Z64+Z86) all cancelled by the “C30” duplex of Valparaiso and prepaid 2 s. 10 d. comprising 2 s. 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter plus 4 d. registration to New South Wales. The cover is endorsed at upper left “Via San Francisco”, but scored through and replaced by “Brindisi”. Two strikes of the Valparaiso “REGISTERED” handstamp in black with the London registered datestamp on obverse (July 17) and Sydney arrival on the reverse. One of the 3 d. stamps was originally applied around the edge of the envelope, otherwise very fine. A delightful and extremely rare usage. Cert. BPA (1975). originally wrapped around a maritime cover from Valparaiso to
Salta, Argentina endorsed "Por Vapor Vapeuro i Copiapo" showing all
twelve re-entries made by Perkins Bacon to the original 1853 issue,
positions 229-240 being the last horizontal row of the sheet
(arranged on the cover as illustrated on the album page, see
Internet scan), all tied by "Inutil" obliterators in black with
VALPARAISO despatch cds (Dec 10), COPIAPO transit in black (Dec 14)
and thence via the Straits of Magellan. Some stamps unfortunately
showing a few faults but nevertheless an extraordinary usage - 12
re-entries on one cover and the companion piece to the "Re-Enries"
collection. Unique.

“Cincinnati O. Jan 3” cds and duplex grid on cover with original
letter datelined December 27, 1865 still accompanying, addressed to
Paymaster of the "USS Powhatan", care of U.S. Consul, Valparaíso,
Chile. The ship was there in part to protect U.S. interests during
the early phases of the Chincha Islands War (also known as
Spanish–South American War). Manuscript routing instructions “Via
Panama” at upper left and carried by American packet to Panama,
then by British packet to Chile. Clear “Panama JA 28 66” British
transit marking below stamps, part strike of red "25" centavos due
handstamp at center and red “24” credit marking at bottom
right.
Some minor cover edge wear and small part of backflap missing but overall a visually striking franking paying the 34c rate to Chile via Panama, with the original letter still present - an uncommon and desirable usage reflecting mid-1860s transoceanic military postal routes and consular forwarding practices.

mourning ...more Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1875: Registered mourning envelope from Valparaiso, Chile to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1865 Great Britain 4 d. vermillion, pl. 14; 1867 2 s. dull blue and 1873 3 d. rose, pl. 12, two examples, (Gibbons Z63+Z64+Z86) all cancelled by the “C30” duplex of Valparaiso and prepaid 2 s. 10 d. comprising 2 s. 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter plus 4 d. registration to New South Wales. The cover is endorsed at upper left “Via San Francisco”, but scored through and replaced by “Brindisi”. Two strikes of the Valparaiso “REGISTERED” handstamp in black with the London registered datestamp on obverse (July 17) and Sydney arrival on the reverse. One of the 3 d. stamps was originally applied around the edge of the envelope, otherwise very fine. A delightful and extremely rare usage. Cert. BPA (1975). Route - Pacific Steam Navigation Co: Departed Valparaiso by steamer to Panama. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Colon (19 June) per “Shannon” via Jamaica (25 June), Port au Prince (27 June), St. Thomas (29 June), “Martinique” (30 June) and Barbados (1 July) to Plymouth, arriving (16 July); by rail to London. P&O Line: Departed London 6 Aug 1875 by rail to Brindisi; “Baroda” (9 Aug) to Alexandria (12 Aug); “Bokhara” (13 Aug) via Suez Canal to Galle; “Nubia” (28 Aug) via King Georges Sound (11 Sept) and Adelaide (16 Sept) to Melbourne (18 Sept); “Ellora” (18 Sept) to Sydney, arriving 21 Sept 1875 (111 days). Note: The arrival datestamp on the reverse of the 11 September 1875 is incorrect, it should read 21 September. This cover is recorded as Cover No. 7 on Page 171 in “Great Britain: Mixed-franking covers illustrating postage stamp development”. It is the only cover recorded at this rate in the census. The sole British Post Offices Abroad cover recorded from Chile to the Australian Colonies. Provenance: Collection McGowan; Glassco

Three line dated "PANAMA / TRANSIT" in black (Sept 4) and struck on entry with circular "N. YORK / STEAMSHIP" in black with manuscript "24" in blue crayon and "34" (cents) due marking in black (24 c.
