1851: Prince Albert 6 pence slate-violet, laid paper, imperforate,
vibrant colour, good to large margins all round but for the top
left corner cut into side frameline, strong impression, used on an
envelope from Montreal to Boston, USA, dated 13 December 1852, tied
by black concentric target cancel, with clear red “MONTREAL / DE 13
/ 1852 / L.C.” datestamp alongside and accompanying red “CANADA” in
arc exchange marking. Addressed to 'Mrs. Francis Parkman, Boston,
Mass.' Reverse has framed owner mark "Vincent G. Greene" in green.
Correct single-weight rate for letters to the United States, and
this example shows the archetypal usage of Canada’s first 6 d.
issue. A highly desirable cover combining classic usage, early
date, and historical interest - the addressee being the wife of
Francis Parkman, the renowned American historian. An
exhibition-quality rarity of Canadian postal history. Provenance:

struck with “UNKNOWN BY / LETTER CARRIER" handstamp in black

Bendigo Post Office until the Sept 2, when it appears that the
letter was delivered. Some minor soiling, however, very rare. Cert.

cds in black, with clear red NEW YORK / JAN 27 circular transit,
manuscript “3” in red credit to the U.S. and “4” in blue Bahamas
charge mark, both applied in transit. Franking paying the correct 6
¢. composite rate (3 ¢. Canadian postage to the United States + 3
¢. US treaty postage to the Bahamas). Despite the endorsement “Via
Savannah”, the letter was routed by the US Post Office through New
York as the most expeditious route. The left adhesive has trimmed
perforations at base on right and there are some small tears and
wear to edges of envelope. An attractive and well-preserved example
of pre-UPU treaty mail between two non-member territories. Scarce
and desirable Canada–Bahamas cover, illustrating complex postal
accounting between Canada, the US, and the Bahamas. Very few
examples of this correspondence are recorded. Exhibit item: a key
item for collectors of Canadian Small Queens, US treaty mails, or
Bahamas postal history.
