An interesting and wide ranging selection of documents are on offer in our auction on 12 July. The British documents, from the twelfth century, include a rare example of King Edward VI wooded handstamp signature on 1547 document, a wide range of James I and Charles I documents including one bearing part of the Great Seal of Charles I. An investigator’s not book on the state of the ships after the Battle of St Vincent in 1797 which includes details of the state of H.M.S. Victory. The highlight of this auction is a collection of 14 A.L.S. from Charles Darwin to his financial advisor, Thomas Salt, this lot includes a further 17 letters from members of Darwin’s family. A group of letters from General Gordon relating to the attempt to build the railway in Sudan; a group of letters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle demonstration his relationship with the Roc Cycle Co. and other groups from Edward Elgar and Sir William Ramsay. The beginning and end of the Second World War are represented with a letter of thanks from Neville Chamberlain to the Italian ambassador thanking him for his help with Signor Mussolini in achieving the infamous Munich Agreement; naval telegrams heralding the opening of war with Germany and the undercopy of the telex sent to Churchill informing him of Germany’. There is a fine range of documents from the Russian nobility which features a fantastic group of telegrams in the hand of Edward, Prince of Wales to Queen Victoria on his visit for the funeral of Tsar Alexander III and the marriage of Tsar Nicholas II. Two 1895 A.L.S. from Mark Twain bring the sale to a close.
