The auction house Dr. Reinhard Fischer in Bonn will hold its 192nd auction from May 19 to May 20, 2023. Our 192nd auction includes almost 5,000 lots with a large variety of rarities and highlights in the area of philately.
Aside from the classic issues of the Old German States, the catalog includes an interesting Baden offer with the liquidation of an old stock of covers as well as exceptionally beautiful copies of the sought-after top values. The 18 kreuzer in the rare dark green shade, MiNo. 21b, used in superb condition, starts at €1,000.- and the 30 kreuzer MiNo. 22b in used very fine condition starts at €800.-. Almost all lots are accompanied by Stegmüller BPP certificates. The period of the German Empire is marked by the liquidation of several extraordinary collections, e.g. a collection of breast shield values in MH/MNH condition. Among the values, which are also offered with new BPP certificates, are rarities such as a MiNo. 1 block of four in MNH ** superb condition (starting price €2,500.-), the rare MiNo. 10 in MNH ** very fine condition (starting price €6,500.-) and a MNH ** block of four of the MiNo. 27 (starting price €7,000.-). Collectors of later issues also get their fair share, such as the 10 Pfg Germania “Reichspost” in the rare color carmine red (MiNo. 56b) in MNH ** condition with an estimated price of €2,300.- as well as a cancelled charity block MiNo. Bl. 2 in flawless used condition (starting price €4,000.-) and the Mark values of the postage stamp issue “Hitler” with “B” perforation, which are rarely offered with genuine cancellations.
A highlight of the colonial philately is a ship letter from German South West Africa. The sender was August Schmerenbeck who purchased a government-owned estate in Windhoek in 1893. His residence as well as his business premises and another building which was available to the postal administration were located on the estate. The letter was struck with a “DSP DEUTSCH-SÜDWESTAFRIKA CAPSTADT II” (DSP GERMAN SOUTH WEST AFRICA CAPE TOWN II) cancel on February 11, 1907, which is the earliest known use of the extremely rare sea mail cancel. The starting price for this item, which is also of interest to the “Social Philately”, is €2,000.-. An uncut unique sheet of stamps of the “Kopernikus” miniature sheet of the General Government with four imperforated miniature sheets with form number “II” from a proof (MiNo. 104P) is offered at €6,000.-. Two lots from the occupation of Jersey are equally noteworthy. By order of the German Hauptmann Gussek, British postage stamps were struck with the overprint “Hakenkreuz + JERSEY 1940” (Swastika + JERSEY 1940). The 14 offered values (number printed varies between 40 and 60 copies) were not authorized and the majority was destroyed. Only a few sets survived. The starting prices of the MNH ** issues are €10,000.- (small format) and €5,000.- (horizontal oblong format). The SOZ and GDR are well represented with rarities such as the used Bl.13 with the watermark variety 13YI of which only few copies are known (starting price €1,000.-).
There is a rich offer of sought-after issues of PR of China with moderate starting prices for collectors of non-German territories. Among the over 100 lots are highlights such as the “Histrionics” set, perforated and imperforated in MNH ** condition (starting prices €1,000.- and €3,000.-, respectively), “Mao’s Theses” in unfolded strips of five with left sheet margin as well as “Mao’s five new directives” with left lower sheet corner and corresponding “imprints” (starting prices €2,000.- each). Almost all popular souvenir sheet issues are offered in flawless MNH ** condition.
The collections provide many opportunities for collectors and resellers alike. Almost all of the nearly 700 lots are from collectors. Countless estates are offered in their original untouched condition without any item selected previously. There is something for everyone, from large German States collections (starting prices up to €10,000.-) to numerous comprehensive country collections, e.g. Switzerland (starting price €4,000.-) and two China collections.Short Terms and Conditions
The sale of auction lots is subject to differential taxation. If we ship lots inside the EC, the buyer shall pay a buyers premium of 25 % of the hammer price and a lot fee of 3,– EUR per lot (both including VAT), also costs of shipping and insurance. If we ship lots to a country outside the EC, the buyer shall pay a buyers premium of 21 % of the hammer price and a lot fee a 3,– EUR per lot, also costs of shipping and insurance. If the goods are exported outside the EC by the buyer himself, it may be possible to refund VAT. For gold coins that are exempt from VAT, the buyer shall pay a buyers premium of 21 % of the hammer price and a lot fee a 3,– EUR per lot, also costs of shipping and insurance.
