Stamps:
The German States collection “Postinspektor Albert” (postal inspector Albert) of Baden and Württemberg that grew over three generations of collectors is offered in a special section. In particular the most rare items of these areas can be found in superb quality. The rare MiNo. 17b silver grey, 21b dark green and 22a and 22b are offered at a starting price of 1,000.- each in very fine and superb used condition, respectively. There are in total six values of the 70 kr. stamp of Württemberg, including the MiNo. 42a and b in flawless used condition (starting prices 2,200.- and 1,700.-, respectively). The offer includes units and single values, interesting covers with in part rare color shades and franking combinations to foreign countries such as two tricolor frankings sent overseas and sought-after unused and MNH ** values in perfect condition. Moreover, interesting items of postal history such as two “Lederbriefe” (covers made of leather) of Württemberg from the 15th century and rare stamps such as the prephilatelic L1 “SPAICHINGEN” in blue as cancellation on cover with the MiNo. 2a from the well-known “Hauff correspondence”. Only three letters franked with stamps with this cancellation are left. It is offered at a starting price of 3,000.-.
Aside from the sought-after standard issues, the main catalog comprises a number of special items.
The German States are broadly represented. Particularly noteworthy are sought-after MNH ** values of Bavaria such as a MiNo. 21a (starting price 800.-). The liquidation of several high-quality specialized collections of the German Reich includes all sought-after standard issues in MNH ** and used condition and rarities such as a block of four of the 9 kr. “Großer Brustschild” (large breast shields) MiNo. 27a MNH **. On one of the stamps the plate error “color spot under the first R” can be found. This plate error is unique in MNH ** condition which makes this unit that is already rare in itself a real gem of the breast shield philately (starting price 7,000.-). A used “Nothilfe” souvenir sheet in extremely fine condition is offered at a starting price of 4,000.-. Aside from several flawless MNH ** color shades of the Germania issues, frequently with upper margin copies even from the rare color shades, varieties and proofs, sought-after watermark varieties are put up for auction, including a superb copy of the 1 RM “Danzig Abschied” (Gdańsk farewell) with upside-down watermark Y MNH ** (starting price 4,000.-).
The occupation issues of the end of the colonial period are broadly represented such as a 2 M imperial yacht of the Marshall Islands with overprint “G.R.I.” in type II with overprint error I which is entirely unknown in the Michel catalog and presumably unique. The rare stamp is offered at a starting price of 4,000.- in MH * condition with a certificate of the BPA. The highlight of the Gdańsk philately, the “Große Innendienst” MiNo. 47/49, is offered at a starting price of 1,400 in perfect MH * condition. Among the rich offer of occupation issues from WWII, the propaganda forgeries are especially noteworthy. A pair set of the proofs of the American propaganda forgeries of the 6 and 12 Pfg Hitler values (MiNo. 15/16 P), produced by the “Office of Strategic Services” (predecessor of the CIA) in the summer of 1944, would enrich every sophisticated collection of the area as even single values or sets are extremely rare (starting price 10,000.-). One of the rarest FDC sets of the Federal Republic can be acquired at a starting price of 3,000.-: The entire “Posthorn set” on six postally used first day covers. In the area of China, sought-after MNH ** sets are offered as well as a used Bl. 8 “Schauspielkunst” (dramatic arts) souvenir sheet in outstanding quality (starting price 2,000.-).
Almost all of the over 500 lots are from collector hands. Countless estates are offered in their original untouched condition without any item selected previously. There is something for everyone, from a large specialized “Spaichingen” collection from a Württemberg enthusiast with several thousand items from the pre-philatelic to the post-war period in over 60 large albums (starting price 7,500.-) to the lifework of a Gdańsk collector starting with pre-philatelic items and forerunners, a specialized stamp collection, high-quality covers as well as official and postage due stamps accompanied by almost 30 certificates (starting price 5,000.-) to a large bunch of letter lots (“from old to new”) that we picked up with two large vans.
